ActiveSync "Setup Missing Required File"

When I try to install AS 3.8 from the Microsoft Website (or from the CD) I get the following error AFTER a 100% install:

Setup missing required file
Setup required the file
c:\documents and settings\my name\local settings\temp\IXP000.tmp\support\nt5_supp.dll, which does not exist
Please run setup again

have tried everything i know to try. have tried the solution recommended by Michael Sean Brown from google groups. Unfortunately the IXP000.tmp file (or anything remotely close in name) is not on my computer.

I have tried installing in safe mode. I have looked in the registry to uninstall recommended files from other forums. Once again, I don't have those files.

Any thoughts? Thanks thanks thanks!

Did you clear the Temp folder before reinstalling. What OS are you using?
If you get dead silence after breaking the speed of sound, would you be in the darkness after passing the speed of light?

Do you have the "show hidden files" and "display contents of system folders" checked in File Explorer's Folder Settings - view tab? Also, make sure that the "hide system files" box is unchecked.
Best Regards,

Wooch
