Other database syncronization would be nice too. ActiveSync no longer converts cdb files.

I sync with two computers (one at home, one at work) and I want to be able to segregate the data so my work computer isn't full of my personal stuff, and my home computer isn't full of my work stuff. With AS now, it doesn't matter which PC I sync with, everything on my PDA gets copied over to the PC.

I've been waiting for Microsoft to put this simple feature into AS for well over 3 years now.

Definitely WiFi or even possibly remote internet syncing would be great. Also more reliable/faster/more resource efficient connection and syncing. AS is such a resource hog. I hate it when AS virtually freezes up the computer when I connect or sync.

Do we ever ??

I have been trying to "ween" my self off of Microsoft Office for some time now. I use Open Office for almost everything. I use gmail, google calendar, I want to try to use some of Mozilla's new clients. ie Calendar, etc...
Also, Active sync seems to cause more problems, lockups, buginess. then it's worth.

Now's the problem. The main reason I wanted to get "smart phone" because I wanted to be able to sync the email and especially the contacts database.

I thing I'm going to have to install Outlook back on the ole PC to get the sync going again.

I you could develop a utility to sync say a Treo 700w with other email / calendar apps You'd be man of the year.

Keep us posted, I'll be waiting with anticipation.
Thanks,

Can I be a Beta Tester Now!!!! My pda's sync pretty much when they want too. I agree with everything that has been said before and when I get a chance to think about it I will probably come back and add some things.
Active sync is probably the worst aspect of dealing with PDA's for me anyway.

Replacing active stync. 1st I would say that there should be a protected or base mode of operation that no matter how you have screwed up your machine you can transfer files to and from it.
2nd you should be able to sync a ridiculous number of devices like 10 at one time. And this should be Independant of any other
mobile devices, like mp3 players that you have tied to the machine.
3rd one should be able to drag and drop files from any connected ppc to any other to and from the mp3 to any ppc, to and from any portable
device to any internal or external harddrive, the ability to reinstall software from a opt in list with serial numbers
for those times when you have crashed or otherwise screwed up your machine and dont want to reinstall everything.
wifi and bluetooth sync-ing would be great
Sync over the net would be good

Question alternative to activesync

The other reason for an alternative to activesync is that many companies' IT security nazis do not allow programs that require the use of the registry like ActiveSync to be installed on our computers.

Anyone got any experience with Dmailer? This does not require local admin on a PC and runs stanalone and has its own interface that syncs with outlook.

Are there any similar programs or any PPC programs to get your PDA to sync with a file on the device rather than ActiveSync?

I would definitely love to see a replacement for active sync, no program has plagued my axim more and before that my toshiba. I'm sick of unable to complete sync messages with no explanation why or no recourse to fix the error, only able to sync with outlook, dropped contacts and dates with no request from active sync to do so, etc

You would be a god if you could replace activesync!

I do tech support for a living and am 100% sick of M$oft locking the market with this program and then not supporting it. I've got several customers with new phones (off topic for Axim) that can't use them because the sync doesn't work. They've got really expensive phones without so much as a contact list. One forum on the microsoft site hasn't had a response from anyone at microsoft in over 3 mos. Just ticked wm5 and 6 users posting there. It's insulting that they think they don't have to support they're monopoly of products. ----breathing deeply and.....

:) my votes are for:
- wifi sync (why did they get rid of it in the first place?)
- not connecting to outlook 100% of the time to allow a pst backup once in a while would be a nice idea
- data sync (mp3's, docs, xls, pics, etc.) to storage cards as well but, with the option not to convert or compress the files ie. mp3's are not degraded to save space. For example, the sd can be inserted into a pc and the spreadsheet can be read directly.
-conversion of the openoffice .ods and .odt (? writer and calc) conversions to pocket excel and pocket writer format.
- if possible intercept calls from software pkgs that do direct sync through activesync like Tourateq QV mapping software pulling data from gps programs for one. I'm sure there's others. I don't know how specific this would be as I don't code but something to keep in mind.
- best of all remote wifi sync with an adjustable port for access from any wifi connection on the net. Maybe this could also have a pick list of a library of files to select for transfer, viewable from the device itself with folders you can tag as being accessible ie. My Music or My Pictures or cab installers

An ubuntu or other deb version of the software would be fantastic too.
