First let me introduce myself, I'm a second year undergraduate at the University of Warwick in England studying Computer Systems Engineering. Currently I am thinking about ideas for a third year project, and since I have been recently having trouble with Activesync I was thinking about writing an alternative, finishing the project around this time next year.
Do people feel that there is a need for an activesync alternative and if so what kind of things are important to you? Eg. Plugins to allow synching with more applications, proper wifi synching etc.
I'm not sure exactly what folks are having problems with while using active sync... What sorts of things are you doing that are beyond how I'm using my x30 hi? I mainly use mine at work to access files from memory, calander, etc. and away from work surfing the web via bluetoothing with my nokia 6600. I did have to get adobe but no probs there either. How am I not utilizing full potential of activesync?
I'd love to get rid of Outlook. It would mean being able to sync with Firefox Thunderbird for example (mails + contacts at least). :approve:

I think that Activesync itself does a good job. The only two things that I would like to see changed are:
(a) the ability to sync to storage cards or BIS - maybe have an "Axim My Documents" main directory and within there have four seperate directories for "main memory", "built in storage", "cf card" and "sd card" or something.
(b) the ability to have two devices connected and sync'ing at the same time. I have an X50v and an SPV-C500 smartphone and I need to unplug one and then plug in the other to get sync'd, so I have to remember to do them both before I leave the office. I'd like to have the Axim sync'ing via USB and the phone via BT, both at the same time. That way whichever device I make a change on, the other two are updated.
The bility to sync to a program other then outlook could be done as a plugin for activesync, not jsut as a replacement. The active sync interface is well documented by mictosoft and it is faily easy to write a sync module if you have C++ experience.
This is a terrific idea! I think any alternative to activesysnc would be very welcomed by many. I would love to eliminate the need to sync with outlook. I would rather sync with any other calender application (there must be an open source one out there somewhere?) & access my memory cards & install software. Another idea would be to be able to read all my mp3's off the card so I can use winamp or something to play them on my computer at work. Good luck with this project!!

Excellent idea! I often find out my files are not in the right place (they are on the PPC when I want them on the PC, and the opposite).
Basically, this would involve getting some drive letters for the PPC (Like one letter per card, built-in S. and RAM). Thus it could be more integrated in the Windows world.

I think I mentioned this in another thread, but FinchSync sounds interesting as it claims to sync
Quote:
contacts, appointments and tasks from Mozilla email and calendar products with a Pocket PC or SmartPhone.
Contacts are synchronized with the email client's address book. The build-in applications of the Netscape- and Mozilla Application Suite are supported as well as the standalone Mozilla Thunderbird.
Contacts and tasks are synchronized with the Mozilla Calendar extension for the Mozilla Suite, Firefox and Netscape or the standalone Sunbird (only Version 0.2 is supported directly, see HowTo section for instructions about syncing with later versions like 0.3 etc.).

Syncing information from remote locations would be very productive. Yahoo Go! is a small example of remote syncing from times you are away from your desktop ala router...
