before you mentioned it - no I hadn't. I have zone alarm suite, the microsoft XP FW and norton 2005 antivirus comes with a type of FW as well.
I turned all 3 off as far as I can tell and tried it again.
same error message.
I am running right now (i just reformmated the silly HD 3 days ago and haven't had time to fill up the registry with too much crap) win XP sp1, sp2 after web updates, norton 2005 with updates, ad aware, adware/spyware by bulletproof.com, office 2003 inclusive, WS_FTP 9.0, Adobe pro 7.0, codecs and that's it!!!
ok, well i have now tried just about everything - except 4.0...that is.
I uninstalled and reinstalled. now.
Does outlook 2003 bother it since it comes packaged with 2002?
Is there a way via IR or BT that I can do the first connection?
Is there some other 3rd party software to sync? (there was for palm)
I can't believe that afetr all this - this stupid piece of crap software is preventing me to finally use it!!! arrrrgggghhhh

frustration level speaking......
OK- pardon me if I am stating the obvious- just trying to help I know how frustrating these things can get sometimes.....
but you are installing activesync without your PPC in the cradle aren't you ???
While you indeed are stating the obvious, it is always good to review the basics.
the program exists now on the computer.
it either does one of 2 things, starts trying to cinnect and then error as above, or it tries to connect and doesn't do it - i let it try for 4 hours last night.
now that i tried with intellisync trial and i get the same blasted error, so i am starting to belive it has nothing to do with the program....duh!
since i just reformatted, i am trying to seeif i missed something,
However, nothing helped. Since I was pretty anal about set points during my latest reformat, I just went backwards to before I did all my "anti-" programs (i.e. antivirus, FW, adaware, etc) and that did the trick.
The fun will come when I try to install these things NOW!!!
:)
Anyone use ZA suite? norton 2005? anyone with problems because of them singly or in combination?

YES, YES, YES! you do not need more than one firewall. They will conflict. Maybe not right away but eventually you will find stuff that won't work right and it will be from haveing mu;tiple firewalls running. They will block each other. And then there's the problem of not really stopping when you disable them. Sometimes they just keep right on doing what they were doing, the windows one has done this, and you won't think about it but it will cause a problem. Use the Zone Alarm if you paid for it otherwise at least turn on the windows firewall. but that is all you need. my rant for the day, thanks.

thanks for the reply.
i thoiught just ZA was the only one even on. then the 2 others decided to start working. sigh.
oh well. now it will be a game of trial and error!!!
I find ZA very buggy. Plus you don't have to actually activate the programs for them to conflict...
I would remove ZA and stay just w/ Norton or viceversa. I had the same issue, trying to install another prog. I use Norton and installed Nod32 once- took me weeks to realise what the problem was....
