Everything is greyed out...

I just got my x50v about a week ago, so please pardon my utter noobiness. :waaa:

I first set up my ppc on my home pc, so that I could get started. I set it up as a 2 pc partnership, with my home pc as the guest. I'll only be transferring ppc apps and misc kids pics, music, and the occasional ebook (MS Reader) or tv program (betaplayer).
At work, I set up the full partnership, 2003 Outlook, contacts, tasks, notes, etc. I have no problems with the work connection.

However, I just cradled my ppc to my home pc and all I get is a 5 second connection, long enough for the activesync window to pop up, and the sync icon to start rolling green, then nothing.

The message window next to the sync says "No partnership" and "not connected". When I click "file" everything except 'get connected', 'connection settings', and 'close', is greyed out.

The 'connection settings' shows that the usb connection is connected, but only for about 30 seconds or so, then it says "usb is available".

Because everything is greyed out, I can't even delete the partnership to try to recreate the partnership. I've downloaded activesync 3.8 and installed it, disconnected the usb cradle, shutdown/startup the pc, connected the usb cradle, inserted the ppc into the cradle, but still a big fat nothing!

I'm going to try syncing my ppc at work, and will post my findings.

That's because as a "Guest" you're not syncing anything. When you get that message again say you want a guest partnership then you can transfer files.

Under which pull-down menu is this located? I looked at all of the pull-downs and couldn't see anything about creating a guest partnership. I did a uninstall of activesync, rebooted my pc, reinstalled activesync, attached the usb cradle, and inserted my ppc. It syncs for a few seconds, then the majority of the pull-downs are greyed out. Where is this "guest" partnership selection?

I really appreciate the help, Don't Panic! BTW, I haven't received my Hitchhiker's Guide, yet. Can I expect it soon?

Sure all you have to do is order direct from Megadodo Publications, Megadodo House, Ursa Minor, by sending $7.44 for the book plus $1,091,160,714,302.37 postage and handling. And the book is yours! Of course you could just use this link http://www.vogon.com/megadodo/ but I know you wouldn't lke it.

Back on topic-When you cradle your device it should ask what kind of partnership you want to set up. I think I misread you though... Didn't you say you already did this once?

I think you need to set up the same partnership as your work one, same name and everything. Then in Active sync under the "tools" tab choose "Options" then uncheck everything you don't want to sync with your home computer.

Problem solved

It was my slightly paranoid persona that caused the problem. :hide:

After I first installed Activesync, everything was fine. I could sync, transfer pics, movies, file, etc.

Then, I got the brilliant idea to do a little security cleanup on my pc. I went into the McAffee Firewall app and started to block apps that I didn't use or didn't want to access the internet. Too many ports open mean too many points of entry.

Long story, short...I blocked Activesync.
On a whim, I unblocked Activesync, and voila! it started working.

Great post! I can see making this mistake myself - and now won't.
