backup in active-sync
HI, i'm a complete rooky to the scene. I just bought a second-hand Axim X5, along with a Pretec compactGPS-LP.
the backup-battery was always stating "low battery", even when I changed it. I read a thread on the forum with this problem, suggesting a hard-reset. I first made a backup using Active-sync 3.8. (still need the GPS-program + drivers for gps.... now i've got the battery working perfectly, but I can't restore my backup! active-sync claims that my device is nog the same as the one with which i made the backup-file ? when I log in, with my pocket-pc using the same name as before, it says I have to rename it, because that user allready exists & that I would have to become guest-user. so I still have the backup file (about 10mb) but I can't get it back on my ppc ???? any help? thanks; Jo-KING

thanks for your extremly quick reply. however, i've been searching the forum for possible answers before making this post, so I allready tried that. is it possible the previous owner had installed a newer windows version, then the one I have now (after a hard-reset) ? because the Help-file of active-sync claims this could be caused by "another processor-type" (impossible, cause it's the same ppc "another windows version" (??) "another language" (I've set up the correct language, as before)

A hard reset will not affect the ROM version. As long as it was you who made the backup, you should be able to restore.
Did you make sure you deleted ALL old partnerships? Do you remember the PPC name on your device before you backed up? Your name needs to match the backup. You can change your PPC name by going to Start - Settings - System - About - Device ID (tab).

NO, it is more likely that the Device ID name (which is Pocket_PC by default) was changed to something else when he made the backup. If you know what it was, you can edit your device ID through the control panel and then use the backup.

again, thank you Gigi for your support,
however, i'm still getting the same error. My ppc was named "funny_thing" before I did the backup. i made the backup to c:\axim_backup ; instead of the application-data\... folder after the hard-reset, I made a connection with activesync, and it asked the name, I mistakenly typed "cool_thing" ('cause it is ![]() then the troubles started.. i now have three folders in my "documents&settings\jo\aplication-blablabla\profiles funny_thing Pocket_pc Cool_thing & my backup-document is in another folder on my c:\ I removed all partnerships & started deleting those profiles folders & copied the backup to the "funny_thing" folder. did another hard-reset on the ppc, & made sure the name & language was correct. then plugged it in the cradle & activesync asked me to synchronise. all works well, but when I try to restore the backup, i still get the error that it's a wrong device "wrong type" (I'm native dutch speaking, so my windows error-message is dutch. I just translate it at my best capabilities, perhaps the message is different in english) is the backup.stg the only file I'd need? & could I restore it manually or with another program?

Did you set the time zone on the Axim back to what it was in the backup?
ie - if the backup was done with the time zone in PST, ensure that you set the Axim for PST before restoring.

yes, this was done when I did the hard-reset. the ppc asks me which time-zone i'm in. it was correct before, and should be fine now.
is there a way to check the settings of the backup-file? i'm starting to imagine every setting possible now.. it keeps giving me that error :s

Now I am just guessing...but...can you try making a new backup (using "funny_thing" as the device name) to see where the file ends up? Then manually copy your old backup file into that same location and try to restore again?

Can you delete the partnership, connect as a guest and restore the back-up?
You can then soft reset and go through the connection wizard properly.
