Question Filter what gets synced to PC

I have several categories of items on my PPC that I do NOT want to have synced to my PC...various calendar items and tasks.

I have opened the Settings for the Calendar and Tasks in the desktop Activesync, checked "Sync only items in the following categories," and thought I was good to go.

On my next sync, I found that the items I did not want to sync remained on my PC but were removed from my Axim X50v. Exactly the opposite of what I wanted!

Please tell me that it is possible to add a category of item to calendar/tasks on my PPC and NOT have the thing show up in my Outlook calendar. Surely there is a way??

Thanks!

I don't think there is a way to do that.

The settings in activesync are to control what goes on the PPC, not what the PPC puts on your computer.

AJ,
First, to be honest, I dunno but here's a rough idea that you can play with. Create a new appropriately named folder on the desktop.
Open outlook...open the catagory lists. Right click the ones in question and click move to that new folder.....Restart the desktop and activesync....let me know please!

Forgive my ignorancre, but I'm unclear what you mean. Desktop? Do you mean the Windows desktop? Move categories to a folder? Can that be done? Or do you mean move items in a category to the folder? If so, they just get replaced on the next sync. Or were you talking about the handheld rather than the PC?

I feel I'm missing some fundamental understanding here.

AJ,
Create a new folder on the windows desktop...the one with all the icons. Right click on the catagory you wanna move. Click move to and specify the folder that you made on the desktop...it worked when I tried it.....restart both computers and activesync....good luck!!
:) :)

OK, I've never felt so dense in all my life. This obviously is making perfect sense to you, but I feel like I can't even find where to start from.

I began by creating a new folder on the Windows Desktop, as you suggested. Then I opened Outlook, and ran into a problem. Right click on the category I wanna move? Where do I do that?

If I go to Edit > Categories, I get a list of categories with checkboxes, but they cannot be right-clicked on. If I bring up the Master Category list from this dialog I get more of the same.

So I tried right clicking on an actual calendar item. Found a Categories menu item there and clicked on it, but I got the same dialog as the previous paragraph.

With a calendar item selected I clicked Edit > Move To Folder. But this doesn't give me the option to move the item to the folder I created on the desktop, only folders within Outlook. OK, I'll try that. I created a folder, Specified it to hold calendar items, and moved an item. It prompty vanished and I haven't been able to find it again. It also removed the item my Axim.

So, if you will bear with me just a little while longer, can you please explain in a little more detail exactly what you are suggesting that I should try?

Thanks!

AJ

Hmm...Maybe it's a version thing. I am using Outlook 2003, and from the Outlook Today screen there is no By Category item under the View menu. Only Navigation Pane, Reading Pane, Reminders Window, Toolbars, and Status Bar.

I see that you are trying to find categories in the 'Outlook Today' screen. You won't find it there. You have to go to individual screens like Mail, Contacts, Calendar to find the 'By Category' option. It does not make sense to have the 'By Category' option in the 'Outlook Today' screen, since this screen is just supposed to give you an overview.

In Outlook 2003, from the menu select View - Arrange By - Categories. This is how it is for Email and Tasks.

For Calendar it is View - Arrange By - Current View - By Category.

For Contacts it is View - Arrange By - Categories.

HTH.
