Question I can't sync my X5, please help

Help.
I can't get my Axim X5 to sync.
I got it a year ago and at first, on one of my computers it worked fine. But then I lent my CD that came with my X5 to a friend, he returned it and I lost it.
Then I couldn't get my X5 to sync with any other computer. I tried to down load drivers from the internet and other places, but I couldn't get it to sync. Then, a friend from work lent me a Axim X30 with the software CD. That one worked great, up until recently when I broke it. Now I'm trying to get my old X5 synced and I can't get it to work. The orginal computer it worked on it gone, I haven't found the orginal CD for the X5 and I can't seem to get it to work.
I plug it onto my computer's USB connection. Hardware manager can see the device. But active sync 3.7.1 won't connect to it. It seems to detect that a device has been connected to it cause it says: "Connecting" and my Axim says "Connect to", but them the active sync window disappears on my axim, and on my PC it just says "Connecting" for a long period of time.
I've tried deleteding the partnerships in activesync from the other Pocket PC i've had and I've tried updating and change the driver for the Axim device in Hardware manager several times. I've also tried "Get Connected" in active sync many times, but it just can't fine a device.
Any anyone help me?

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Activesync (and updating it to AS 3.8 whilst you're at it)? Do you have a firewall enabled? If so, try disabling that.

I just did a hard reset on the device and uninstalled Active sync, rebooted and installed Active sync 3.8. I saw no difference.
I also hooked my device to another user's computer who has a Axim X30, I had the same problem on his computer, but his X30 works fine.
Do you think it might be the sync cable? It got it off of E-bay cause mine didn't come from Dell. But When I hook up the cable, I can see that it's charging and it appears fine in Hardware manager.
Has anyeone else had problems like mine with cables bought on E-bay? I'd buy one from dell, but they costs $20 plus shipping and I don't want to spend that much money if it's not a cable problem..
Thank you...

Does anyone thing it might be a problem with Activesync being too new for my PDA?
Perhaps I have to use an old copy of ActiveSync to first update the firm ware on my PDA and then upgrade activesync?
Has anyone else had or heard of a problem like this?
Any help would be great.
Thank you

I don't think the ActiveSync version is causing the problem. Do you have a cradle you could try instead of the sync cable?

No, I only have the one cable I got off of E-bay.
I'll be willing to buy a new cable or cradle if we can eliminate almost all other possibilities..
I just don't want to waste my money on new cables if it's not the problem..

Ok, then this is what I would do:

1. Do a Backup of your Axim.
2. Uninstall ActiveSync.
3. Do a hard reset on your Axim.
4. Reinstall ActiveSync.
5. Attempt to sync using the cable. Do not plug in the cable before installing ActiveSync.

If it doesn't work, I would restore the backup. Do not restore until you've tried to connect. If it connects, then do not restore as you will be restoring back your problem.

Good luck.

Thanks..
I've already tried that (Except backing it up, I didn't have anything on it anyway) I even tried different versions of activesync.

I'll try it on my home computer tonight (I been testing it on my work computer). If that doesn't work and I don't get any more suggestions, I guess I'll have to buy a new cable or cradle.

Thanks..
