Not using ActiveSync

I have a new X50v sitting in the charger receiving it's first charge This is my first PPC. I've been reading a bunch here lately and have pretty much gone into information overload for now. The instructions state after an 8 hour charge I need to have ActiveSync installed on a pc and do a sync before I do anything else. Do I have to use ActiveSync?

I don't use Outlook or other Microsoft office products (although I do have them installed on Win2K desktop). I plan on using the Axium to surf the web on my home wireless network or through Bluetooth on my cell phone away from home. While not at home I'd probably want to check email (maybe use web email?) and maybe use MSN messenger through the cell phone. I'd like to be able to move files between Axium and laptop running XP Pro with wireless or Bluetooth and maybe the desktop running Win2K that doesn't use Bluetooth at the moment. It seems some PPC programs have to begin installation on a PC and then move the .exe to the PPC. Can I do this with my setup and not use ActiveSync?

The reason I ask this is this would be one less software program to worry about and I wouldn't have to worry about blowing up a usb port or a motherboard everytime I plug in a usb cable to use ActiveSync. I think I saw you could sync using wireless or Bluetooth but still have to do first with usb connection using ActiveSync.

I hope this made sense

It makes it much eaiser to install programs and explore files/folders on your Axim. You would also need it if you ever plan on doing a ROM update that Dell puts out once and a while. So if I were you I would install it. From there you don't have to use it all the time. But you will need it at some point. I would also not worry about the USB problems as I don't think they are very common anymore. Don't know what verson came on your disk, but ActiveSync 3.8 can be downloaded form the M$ site www.pocketpc.com Good Luck~

PS - Congrats on the Axim and welcome to AximSite!

Thanks for the welcome!
I just don't want to be one of those unlucky ones who defy the odds Will the Axium let me do anything before syncing up first?

Some stuff. But again, you will want to install software, backup, transfer music/files/movies, update roms, ect. Some can be done with out ActiveSync but it a little harder if you don't know a bit about PPCs. I really beleive you will have more trouble then you need trying to avoid ActiveSync then it is worth. But, regardless I wish you the best of luck.
