Possible Activesync Solution (A Little Long)

Hello all Aximsite readers!

After 3 months of owning an Axim X50v and having it become an integral part of my daily life, I first would like to thank all of you for helping me realize the full potential of this amazing device. Since I found this site soon after I bought it, I find myself coming back here daily (can't..stop..visiting..here). Until now, I was happy being an unregistered reader since I didn't have anything in particular to contribute. Now that I do (I hope), I felt obligated to try and give back especially since it has been so helpful to me.

This weekend I experienced what seems to be a not so uncommon occurance with Activesync. After working quite well for awhile, Activesync decided to stop functioning correctly. When I plugged the x50v into the cradle, it would acknowledge the connection, call up the sync screen, but then after only a few seconds disconnect, leaving the program to hang. The strange thing was when I deleted the partnership and started again, if I selected a Guest partnership, I was able to transfer files back and forth. After not receiving any help from Dell's Tech Support (should've known), I tried to figure out myself what is causing the issue, and I think I found it. It's Activesync's relationship with Outlook. For some reason, Activesync will somehow lose it's "connection" with the program, therefore preventing it from syncing but allowing a guest partnership. So in order to restore this connection, I did the following:

1. Delete all partnerships with Activesync.
2. Backup all data onto the BIS. I use the supplied Backup program.
3. Hard reset. Do not restore yet.
4. Re-establish a new partnership with your computer.
5. Once you have a partnership, and you are able to select what you want to sync (Tasks, Calendar etc.). Uncheck everything Outlook related except Favorites. You do not want to sync with Outlook at this time. Let it now sync. A partnership should now be made.
6. Now, click the Activesync icon in your tray to call up the Sync box. You now want to select the Outlook items 1 at a time. Let it sync each one before continuing to the next.
7. Restore your data.
8. Resync with the cradle.

That's it. I have tried this several times, and it seems to work for me. Obviously try at your own risk. Hopefully it works for you as well, and sorry it's so long. By the way, if this post is in the wrong area, please feel free to move it.

Welcome to Aximsite and thanks for sharing. I just wanted to point out that while this solution seemed to work for you, there is always the possibility that restoring from a backup that was made when a problem existed *may* restore back the problem. However, steps 5 & 6 may have helped get around this problem. :approve:

Moved to ActiveSync.

Thanks for the detailed steps. Unfortunatley my Activesync problems usually stem from something in the PDA and not the desktop. The other day I decided to uninstall a English-Spanish dictionary and that was all it needed as an excuse not to sync any more. I really hope that AS4 and WM5 will help to alleviate some of the AS issues just about everyone seems doomed to face. I can honestly say that this is the only thing I still miss about the Palm world is that I never had an issue with Hotsync.
