Switch from Axim to iPhone

I've been considering making the change ever since the iPhone came out. But I've been concerned about 2 things.
First, the cell service is something I have to accept - moving from Verizon to AT&T (when does the exclusive rights end?).
Second, what is the transition like? I have a ton of software for my Axim X51V and I don't know what it will be like using the iPhone. I would like to take some of the stuff for it but being that it is an Apple product, the software is limited (or so I've heard). I just don't know if it will be an easy adjustment or if I will be causing myself more pain than it is worth.

Thanks for the input.

I can't offer any first-hand experience but Apple is supposed to be making it easier for 3rd party developers to port there offerings to the iPhone when they open their app store.

Neither iPhone nor iTouch is a PDA yet. Give 'em some time, 3rd party apps might bring them up though.

3rd Party Software

I got on email from the makers of pocket informant the other day saying they have ported it over to the iPhone. So there seems to be hope that some good 3rd party apps will be coming to it soon.

I can't believe how so many people are considering iPhone. It is nowhere near an Axim... :(

Maybe it's not the same but it has more features WITH a quality phone! I'm tired of carrying a cell, pager, and PDA on my belt. I look like batman or a cop!

I use iLauncher, Pocket Informant, Pocket Breeze, Pocket Weather, SPB Time, SpashID, Pocket Bible, RealDice Poker, All-In Hold'em, and a few other programs that are not as important.

And will you only be able to purchase through the app store?

Thanks for the input!

Really? More features? I have an IPAQ hw6925 which is a pocket pc and phone. I have no complaints whatsoever with the phone in this device.

I honestly don't see the iPhone as being a replacement of a pocket pc....but to each his own.

If you're tired of carrying around 3 devices, you do have more options than an iPhone.....just admit you want a change and that you like what you've seen in the marketing blitz for the iPhone....we won't mind, really....

Honestly, i prefer a real PDA, HTC has a very good devices collection, with all you can need in a portable device. The Diamond is more complete than the Iphone and with the incredible quantity of software made for the Windows Mobile platform.

The Iphone graphical interface and the Safari easyness make it very atractive, but i don't like the Apple limitations about the programs installation and other aspects, for example the BT profiles. I don't want a device which needs to be hacked to discover almost all of it's potential.

I made the choice and changed my X51v with the HTC X7500, big but gives me all that i need from a PDA, including the accelerometer.

While the Apple app store is a definite step up from the web-based programming options developers had with the release of the original iPhone it will be the exclusive place to get software for your 3G iPhone. This means that freeware from a developers website will not be available until customer outrage sways the mighty Steve Jobs. He'll probably end up hosting the freeware at the app store but you can never tell.

I believe iPhone has most of the apps that you use
launcher, weather, clock, bible, poker, texas hold'em, notes, calendar, etc.
and there will be even more when the app store launch
some could be free and some are not
i have a jailbroken iphone and most of the apps are free
i can use my iphone as good as my old pda if not better
but of coz YMMV

Don't expect to get the broad range of applications available for PPC on appstore. Windows Mobile platform has been there for years compared to iPhone which has only been there for a year. It'll take time for developers to come up with software for the newer platform. To be honest, iPhone has a better designed platform so expect to see some nice "official" apps/games for it soon. There are already tons of free homebrew stuff out there but some of them will have to be ported to work on the 2.0 framework.

Its been said here a few different ways but the iPhone is not a PDA and there will be more Apps coming out in the coming months to close the gap. I have an iPhone 3G but I have not intentions to give up my Axim. Mostly likely I will tether it to the iPh. my 2 cents worth.
