Quality Apps

I just got an iPod Touch as a gift and am trying to learn about it. I've been a long time Axim owner and have followed the great advice at Axim/Mobility Site to find brilliant applications from SBSH, Ilium, SoftMaker, PhatWare, Resco, and other software sources. They have made my Axim a brilliant device I use all day long.

As I try out the iPod Touch, I'm finding a number of entertaining applications that are useful diversions, but only a handful of serious applications. A couple I can find from those vendors I already know who make Windows Mobile software, but I get lost in the host of titles at the Apple App store when I search for others. Most of what I see seems fairly light and of very limited use. All the weather applications, for example, come nowhere near what SBSH Pocket Weather can do; and I see nothing even close to SoftMaker Office.

The exceptions I've found so far are a couple of wallet apps from Ilium and SBSH; Pocket Informant; NPR News; and the Oxford dictionaries.

I'd appreciate hearing from the experienced Apple users who could point me to their favorite, significant applications that can make the iPod Touch (or iPhone) an indispensable working device.

This is currently what I'm rocking with on my lock and home screens I think you'll find the weather particularly interesting.. it doesn't go into details like the windows mobile versions you mentioned (no sunrise/down info, radar pics, humidity, etc). But a nice looking 5 day forecast eh? and on the homescreen no less.

Apps I use for serious stuff are as follows:

*LockInfo (for jailbroken devices only... found on cydia)
*AP Mobile (news)
*Bible Reader or Logos (requires genuine conversion to be thoroughly enjoyed)
*Pocket Informant (AWESOME to/do calendar app that syncs with google and toodledo websites $12.99... worth the money)
*Evernote (Random thought/note collector.. syncs wirelessly with evernote.com and desktop versions FREE)
*Pocket Money & BillMinder (I mention them both at once because they work hand in hand for me.. and it's great that billminder and export bills and payment info directly into pocket money. This has replaced desktop quicken for me and is used closely with the mint.com app. Pocket money supports backups via email and wirelessly to the desktop and exports qif files).
* dictionary.com app (nuff said)
* dropbox.com app (kinda pointless other than playing vid/audio files and deleting stuff.. but i still find that i use it quite a bit).
* spb Wallet (store private info securely and have it available to you at all times.. priceless)
* The Weather Channel App (just because)

Here is what's on my touch from switching from my ipaq 210.

Weatherbug (lite version right now)
To do (simple to do, I have not found a best one yet for me)
Docs to Go (synced with the desktop)
ewallet (synced with the desktop)
Using MS Outlook to sync with the built in Contacts and calendar

I took part in the beta test for Phatnotes. I will probbaly buy that when it is released.

I bought AppBox pro for some of the utilities after seeing Chris' review on that.

I bought a Utility called Memory Info that frees up some memory.

TimesTables (for my son but great for learning his math)

I bought some transit schedules/programs for Boston and NYC for when I travel there (work and fun)

I also installed skype and use that occassionally (I bought the basic apple headphones with the mic).

I am also contemplating this which is supposed to be on sale end of Nov.
