i think the spb keyboard can't be beat. I can actually use my thumbs on the full screen qwerty. I'd say 50% of my posts on aximsite are made with it. It's easy to type posts, emails, chat, anything.

lkingzin53, have you set spb keyboard as your default using some kind of registry tweak?

Yes I have changed my default input method to SPB keyboard without a problem. I used PHM registry tweak to switch it.

SPB keyboard adds a small icon into the default (regular) keyboard. When you click on that icon, the FULL SCREEN keyboard is activated.

It's definitely not necessary to change the default input method, only saves a couple taps each time, but I really like the option of choosing when to use the FULL SCREEN keyboard by tapping that icon. ;]

When I got my first PDA, I tried a bunch of soft keyboards and found the best one IMHO to be the Kilmist Keyboard XL. The other week I moved up to the Axim X51v and found that the Kilmist keyboard works OK, though some of the skins were better than others on the VGA screen (perhaps forced VGA mode would help with all the skins though I didn't try it since I really never have used the soft keyboard). If I did, I would still go with Kilmist. Give it a whirl:

I've always avoided entering notes into my axim because its always been a frustrating experience, but with tengo thumb I can actually picture myself taking notes in a meeting.

Give the demo a shot, trust me its worth it.
I don't know how it can learn as it goes on, considering it's you who has to add a new word to the dictionary; so how does it learn?

It has it's own database of words.

Anybody know of a way to get Ripboard to support gestures?
p.s. Dave, the keyboard learns new words that you "teach" it, which will then show up as possible entries for word completion next time you start to type that word, or something similar.

I know that but it can't add words to it's database without your help can it? I mean in what way can it learn?

In the next couple weeks I'll update this roundup and I'll include Kilmist and any others that are missing. Personally I think Kilmist takes over 95% of the screen and I'd prefer something that takes as little of the screen as possible.

What other ones are missing? I left off Caligrapher b/c in my opinion it's more of a graphiti substitute than a keyboard, but I'll put it on and let everybody decide for themselves.

Dav5: You type a sequence of letters. This is called a word. When you type the space or terminal punctuation character at the end of the word, this signals the learning keyboard software that you have completed the word. If the word is not already in the dictionary, it is added. Clear?

No! You're giving people the idea that the adding of a new word to it's dictionary is done automatically, just as you type normally, but I have Tengo and it does not automatically add a new word to it's dictionary, unless you change from normal typing to a thing called 'Scribing', which involves scribing through each individual letter of the word, then clicking on 'spacebar' the new word is added to the dictionary! You didn't mention 'Scribing'.

If you don't have to scribe to get Tengo Thumb to add the word then I apologise 'cos I only have the ordinary Tengo!

As far as the ordinary Tengo, this is taken from it's own manual:

Quote:
The TenGO dictionary stores most of the commonly used words. But certain words
like people’s names, your own short forms, etc., might not exist in the dictionary.
As such, we have designed ways to allow you to add new words to the dictionary.
Simply use scribing or letter tracking to form the desired word.
PocketBrain: Who adds the words? You type a sequence of letters. This is called a word. When you add the words ( by 'scribing' ). It seems the learning keyboard software is not as clever as you make out. That said, I personally think the Tengo prog is the best out there, and is the fastest and the easiest to use!

Actually, I have no personal knowledge of the Tengo keyboard. The "classic" method I outlined is how MicroSoft's onscreen keyboard works, or at least worked before they disabled learning. I have gotten RipBoard to learn in this fashion, but it has since forgotten how to learn. I answered, outlining the basic ("classic") method, since I wasn't clear that you were asking how to teach a Tengo specifically. Do we have other Tengo users who can outline exactly how to add a word to the keyboard's dictionary?
