Check out Tips from the Trenches for some landscape layouts that I made for RipBoard. Much better than the squashed standard keyboard layout, saves a lot of space vs. the built-in OSK.
Have you looked at "SpeedScript" ? Just started using it and really, really like it & I think I prefer it to Fitaly- which I also really like- but am kinda using both under different circumstances for now. You can write a lot of words barely lifting your stylus- you slide to get vowels & space (tap, tap, slide, slide etc) .
I'm a heavy PPC user, and have been searching for the perfect SIP solution for all my 3 years in the PPC business. I've tried alternate keyboard layouts (like FITALY, TENGO), but since I also am a heavy user of a desktop PC (every day, all day, with the inevitable QWERTY layout), and because my brain seems to have only one keyboard gear, I never ended up liking these options much—nor did I find that they added much speed to my input.
So I had settled on Resco Keyboard Pro, which is a capable product, with such do-dads (sp?) as Fx (where you can store up to 11 custom text strings for recall any time), automatic ('formatable') date insertion, support for foreign characters, etc. The keyboard function & layout is even customizable (though it leaves a modified key unlabelled, and you have to be a major keyboard code guru—or rely on Resco support people.) Over all I have been pleased with this product, with the MAIN ISSUE relating to the time it takes to access the Fx feature—not long in nanoseconds, I'm sure, but an eternity when feverishly trying to takes notes at a public discourse.
But then, just 2 days ago, I tripped over VGAKEY, and, I must say, have been most impressed with this relative newcomer. It has everything I was looking for, is easily customized (it even displays the custom characters on the main keypad), can store scads of custom text strings (via the [Fn] key, as well as an Fx-like text panel), supports foreign language characters (customizable via the [R-Alt] key), has a built-in calculator (like Resco), and is dirt cheap (5 measly US bucks—a quarter of the cost of Resco). And(!): it inserts custom text strings without ANY measurable delay. All in all, a fantastic product.
Pros:
• Cheap
• Fully customizable
• Several included (decent-looking) skins
• Fast
• Excellent keyboard layout (I like the Newlook-2 the best) with several additional keys (compared with Resco), like Home, End & Delete, as well as available 12 Function keys and 4 Control key combinations
Cons:
• Documentation is translated to English, you have to divine some of it
• Keys are fractionally narrower (than Resco), as they put one more key per row
Hey, thanks for this article, i had never heard of TENGO thumb, and it is awesome. I have been using it about a week and it has really helped speed up typing without a physical keybaord.
Since i only found this because it got bumped by a reply, I will try to keep it up there with this post.

Reason: typo
I should also mention that i had a question about Tengo Thumb board before i bought it and recieved a reply within 30 minutes of sending on July 4th.. a good first impression of their customer service. My only disapointment is that it doesn't work with Opera, but according to them it is being worked on (haven't found a good finger typing keyboard that does work with opera yet)

So which is better, TenGO ver. 2.10 or TenGO Thumb ver. 1.04? Does the extra $12 make the latest version worth getting, or are they pretty much the same other than larger buttons on the thumb version?
I'm definitely going to get one of these, just need to know which one. I just tried the free version for 10 - 15 minutes and love it. Sped up my typing by several times!
Well, after spending the last hour or so playing with all 3 versions, I actually like the free version the best. I can't stand the fact that on the pay versions the keys don't depict the actual case of the letters, i.e. upper or lower. The free version does this. So, it's the free version for me! Sometimes simpler is better.

Reason: Answered my own questions
I win a TenGO Thumb license... like it, but sometimes its anoying the way its stand infront of the lower text input in the screen and you end up switching over the traditional default input.
So I finally uninstalled it (Using it in HTC P3600).
I think, the best way to make up your mind is trying them all... which is a lot of work... If TenGO clean up those glitches I definitely stick with it.
Hope my experience can help someone out.

Hey all, anyone found PCM Keyboard (PocketCM Contacts & Keyboard) It is one of the best Soft Keyboards I have seen (and I have tried them all!!) And it is free :D (and no I have nothing to do with it!!)
Very true! PCM Keyboard is invaluable. If you hit the wrong letter, you dont have to delete it. You simply keep sweeping your stylus until you get to the right letter. AND, the word suggestions are intuitive, in the sense that they suggest based on what keys are next to the keys you hit (meaning that, when you write "thos", the suggestion is "this", because the "o" is next to the "i".). The letters are small and so you need the stylus.
Another great free programm is PDA Media Keyboard. It has the funniest sound I have ever heard (old typewriter style), but there are other sounds you can choose from, or none. In the landscape mode, the letters are huge, optimal for thumb typing. Cons for the landscape mode: response time is slow, even after having customized the Options. And even though the letters light up on thump contact, sometimes they do not register.
I would appreciate it if someone could experiment with the Options in order to increase response time.
Lastly, I would love it if someone with a stopwatch could try out the various input programs and tell us the fastest. Without a stopwatch, I would say PDA Media.

I vouch for PocketCM keyboard as well... it's configurable (much more easily than ripboard) as you want, has configurable popup panels, it's skinnable.. has automatic corrections, it just misses gestures and automatic completion.
I browsed thru this thread and I don't think that I saw reference to "Adaptxt".
This data entry system replaces the built-in word completion part of data entry and it comes with its own stylus based keyboard. If you use their keyboard, there is a 3 word and one phrase suggestion block that sits above the keyboard. It 'intuitively' learns, from your past behavior, how to finish your thoughts.
You can use it with RESCO keyboard or the built-in keyboard and instead of the Adaptxt suggestion box, your word choices appear in the small window that appears with the built-in word completion.
The program is very good as is, but does have untapped potential, it seems like they have stagnated over the past year but they did release an update recently, version 2.2.
I'm trying to load PCM Keyboard on my X50V, and I keep getting the error; PCM Keyboard is not a valid windows CE setup file.
I've tried to put it in main memory and tried using cabinstl to put it on my card, same error message.
Is there something I'm missing?
I'm running 2003SE, by the way.
