Is Wifi Companion supposed to automatically connect to hotspots?

Is Socket's Wifi Companion supposed to automatically hook up to wifi hotspots that are open wifi? mine doesn't seem to link up with them unless I do it manually.....

I believe Wi Fi Companion only detects what is available, so you need to manualy connect. At least that is what happens to me. The problem I have is that I can only connect to my network and no other sites. Any sugestions on how to configure my x50v so I can take advantage of the wi fi available at Starbucks?

It displays information that is easier to understand & read. Also has some utilities to diagnose your network. It is not flawless. I read about a simple Click & Connect software item in my browing travels, but I cannot locate the program or link. But it claimed to automatically configure access to the wireless connection found, even anonymously.

I should of saved the link.

what is the point of Wi-Fi Companion then if it doesn't automatically connect to wifi hotspots that you haven't connected with? is there another alternative?

From: http://www.socketcom.com/product/SW1221-596.asp

Socket Wi-Fi Companion is an intuitive and graphical utility that displays your connection properties at a glance. There’s even a Power Save utility, so you can adjust the power settings when using battery power.

Basic features:

Wi-Fi Companion provides users with a friendly, easy-to-use interface to manage WLAN connectivity. The main page icons provide single tap access to browse the web or check email, find WLANs in range, install security certificates, view IP addresses or modify profiles.

The Ping Utility enables users to check network connectivity to another device or host network. Trace Route enables users to identify the number of hops to connect to the Internet and possible sources of delay.

* Wi-Fi Finder
* Find Wi-Fi hotspots in range.
* Get Connected
* Connect to wireless networks securely with a single tap.
* Power Save
* Manage power save settings to maximize battery life of Windows Mobile devices.
* Security
* Works well with all WLAN security protocols supported by Windows Mobile (WPA, WPA-PSK, 802.1x, 40/128-bit WEP, Open).
* Persistence Connectivity
* Connect to Wi-Fi networks quickly and stay connected to the right network.
* Ping Utility
* Check network connectivity and survey your network range.
* Trace Route Utility
* Check each hop in your connection to the Internet to see where delays occur.
Designed to work with Windows Mobile devices with built-in WLAN from Dell, HP, and ASUS

In other words, it has a better display of what is going on, where the issues are instead of guessing, and providing utilties to improve/track performance. You still have to enter the data. I know it sure tracked down my issues, although one time is did not help solve it. A hard reset did fix. (There is no auto-fix like in WinXP.)

Edit: Notation Added. I was in Staples today, found a Kingston WiFi Finder. It found a connection, while in the display package still. Opened up the Axim, fired up WiFi, and WiFi Companion found the Sleep Inn's wireless. It auto-configured and I was surfing in two seconds, no input required. (Though the connection had no encryption.)

Okay, found that program I was looking for that uses a simple tap to connect. Found it in November's issue of Pocket PC Magazine, paqe 77, bottom right.

HitchHiker
www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker
A free application that helps you connect your Pocket PC to the wireless internet. According to the website, you simply tap Connect, and it will try all nearby public access points, handling all settings for you, and performing complicated tests. Also, when it finds access points, it clearly shows whether it is WEP-Enabled or not.
(Works on WiFi enabled 2003 devices.)

Scribbled on Axim X50v while in the dunny.
