VNC is local network only.. so thats not gonna help if he wants to access his desktop from school. with logmein you can contol your desktop from anywhere.. just need wi-fi. and it is extremely fast for me. if its slow then,
1. turn off wallpaper
2. reduce color depth
logmein works like this,
you download the server on your desktop and install the remote control client on your PPC. you go to logmein website with PIE and after logging in you can control your desktop (if its running the server).

hehe i use it to acess my cuzin computer with my computer, the response time is slow and laggy when i scroll up and down while using the internet or moving folders around.
Take a look at Pocket Controller-Professional v5.04 from www.soti.net. I am using it with WM5 on a X51v with no problems. You get mouse and keyboard control with a nice enlarged view of your PDA screen. It has lots of options!
I recently used to make screen captures on my PC to include
in emails to developers to show the exact problem I was seeing.
The screen speed is acceptable to me.
The company makes other products that might satisfy you need
to work remotely from another PC to connect the PC that sync'ed
to it.
which ports should I forward to get into my home network from outside?
I think by default, they start a 5900 but you can change the ports on the server side. You need to open one port for each PC you want to access (e.g., PC #1 = 5900, PC #2 = 5901, PC #3 = 5902, etc.).
I'm now trying with PTvnc. I can connect under local network but still no luck from outside network.
for local network I enter like 192.168.0.3:0. port 0 works and I can connect. for outside network if I enter "my external ip":0, then it doesnt work. I'm a little confused what should the port be from outside network?

If you're using port 0, then you would need to forward port 5900, if you're using port 1, then you would need to forward port 5901...
But you should check in your server settings to make sure you're really using the 5900 level ports.

I guess because you are in your own local net, you can't access
your own "external" address from within your local. am I making myself clear? :)
Try to access from somewhere other than your home net.
