Resco is prettier and more like Windows Explorer and has nicely integrated file encryption. Earlier versions of Total Commander were quite clunky to use and didn't have the registry editor or allow you to map network drives. The latest versions of TC are great though, so unless you've already bought a license or need a specific Resco feature, go for the free one.
Personally I prefer freeware registry editors (there's a few out there) because after an unexpected hard reset when you're out and about you can restore exported registry keys and backups from a storage card without needing to sync with a PC, reinstall the app and enter the license key.

nope, but you can use any freeware registry editor you like, phm to name one. you can also use xnview (freeware too) instead of resco photo viewer if you need one (xnview provides even more functionality).
two things i like about gsfinder+ most: it is free and it can feel almost exactly like resco file explorer or total commander (switchable through one button right in the toolbar). it rules.

A third alternative is Advanced Explorer. It too has a registry editor as well as networking features; however, the one thing it has that no other explorer utility has (that I know of) is a Recycle Bin.
Just an update: the latest version of Resco Exolrer comes with a Recycle Bin.
I tried out total commander today to access my archos jukebox connected to my desktop at home thru my linskys wireless router. With it along with tcpmp i was able to play my video and music files over my lan very nicely. I downloaded the trial version of resco file explorer and will try it also to compare with the tcpmp benchmarking utility. I have one question though I am at work and using another access point other than my home lan which is connected to cable internet but i cant seem to access my home computer at work ap. I am thinking it is because my home computer went into screensaver/sleep mode why I cant see it at work. Can anyone verify this? I can when I get home but that wont be for a good while. Just wondering if any1 else has already ran into this. And I was all jazzed about accessing my media while at work today oh well maybe next shift.
