The Definitive Pocket PC (and, more generally, MIDP!) IRC Client Roundup
I have been pretty busy lately: just published my latest roundup on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Pocket PC clients. What is more, I've even included MIDP clients (also running on the Pocket PC) in the discussion.
If you ever wanted to know what application you need to IRC (not only on the Pocket PC but also on any MIDP-enabled mobile phone/other gadget), read the article – you won't regret it.
Thanks for the informative article! I'm interested in trying IRC out on my X50v, and this will give me something to work with. I just wish there was a version of mIRC for PPC
Very nice roundup. and thanks for the websphere CAB.. was looking for it. I personally liked wmIRC over the other ones I tried.
I have 2 questions about IBM websphere micro,
1. When I tap on a .jar with explorer it asks me whether I want to install it or not. If I choose yes, then it gets installed and displays that it is ready for execution. Now where is it being installed to (folder location)?
2. When I run the JAR files with Midlet HQ, it only takes up approx 1/6th of the Midlet HQ screen. How to make it run full screen? (I'm on QVGA)

Strange; I've checked it on my QVGA iPAQ 2210 with same IBM J9 and JAR files; it's full screen. Dunno, maybe J9 isn't 100% compatible with the x3i?
cool! thanks. Any way to make them install to Storage Card/My Documents instead of main memory?
Dunno; haven't tested because of the small memory consumption (30-40k) of the installed midlets. There's most surely a way of hacking them to a storage card (even with hexediting IBM J9).

I don't think so - all these three MIDP IRC apps should work OK fullscreen. I think it's a J9 problem.
If you can't make them work, let me know and I elaborate a bit on using CrEme to run midlets.

I actually ran some different JAR files, not the ones from your review. Are any of those free for download (so that I can test em)? Or do you know of a JAR that is free for download and fullscreen so that I can test it on my Ax?

I've tried just about every IRC client for WM2k3SE, and I can't for the life of me find a way to connect to multiple networks simultaneously. Multiple channels? No problem, if they're all on the same network.
That's what I get for frequenting 4 channels across 3 networks :/

Much as they indeed have multi-server capabilities, the native PPC IRC clients can be used at the same time, each connecting to different IRC networks.
Thank you for writing up all this information on IRC clients for Axims -- I found it really helpful to see all the information compared. I tried -- and even bought -- wmirc after trying all of them, but it had problems with a server I use where it wouldn't show any text other people typed in the channel (logs worked fine, though).
I know there's a few new IRC clients out there -- zsirc seems like an awesome freeware one but had the same problem on the same server for me -- but I recently found one called mircy (why is it so popular to base names off mIRC?) that worked and had logging, which was the dealbreaker feature for me. It doesn't seem as polished as wmirc and blurs some of the text in VGA unless you use the VGA hack, but it has a channel nicklist, which is kinda nice.
Anyway, I thought it might be useful for anyone else who searches the forums for such things to know about, or who might have similar problems.

Which server did you have problems with? I could give it a try.
