SKTools

Does this app work with Windows Mobile 5? Is it necessary to have a registry cleaner for the PocketPC?

(I actually don't have one for my PC now either. Not since RegClean for Win98. I just tried CCleaner and it trashed
Office, which luckily was fixed with a System Restore.)

SKTools was updated to work with WM5. It's also a tremendous app, but a very powerful one. It has many uses and features, but it's not too easy to navigate unless you're pretty comfortable under the hood of your PPC.

A more user-friendly memory utility app would be Dinarsoft's MemMaid. http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14279

I own both and use both regularly. I've learned to be careful with SKTools after removing things I shouldn't have removed.

I would recommend that you have one of these types of programs to keep unwanted junk off of your machine and to gain easier access to some customization features of your device.

What kinds of stuff would you do with those programs? I've never used either and never had a problem, that I know of, that would cause me to use them.

Well, I gave MemMaid a try. I figured since I'm a fairly new PPC user it would be a better choice than SKTools. It was easy to use, but after running it my AvantGo stopped working! I thought all I did was delete the cache, but clearly it was more than that. When I opened AvantGo I would get a screen asking for my user name and password. I tried putting it in several times, it seemed to sync, but then when I opened AvantGo I continued to get the same message. I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall AvantGo. I'm not sure what happened, but I guess I will hold off on using MemMaid until I can figure it out.

Like xdalaw, I also use both, and agree that you really need to be careful what you "clean". Stevenator65, both utilities do a great job at cleaning junk/temp files such as from browsing or a bad uninstall. There are also other features such as system tweaks (SK only) and moving DLL files (both). I would say that these types of utilities are not necessary, but highly beneficial if you do a lot of browsing and install/uninstall a lot of apps.

Moved to utilities.

If you use AvantGo you want to uncheck the AvantGo Cache Files box. Cleaning these files does cause problems with AvantGo. I think most people find out the hard way.

If you use avantgo, get the new version. it allows you to put the cache on a card, which frees us ppc memory. If you have a program such as memmaid you can choose the size of your cache files.

One of my other favorite features found on both apps, is the ability to reorder the launching of programs at startup. One benefit of this is that you can order the icons which display on your "bottom bar" if that is important to you. I've also found that this can fix some loading problems when certain apps like to load before others.

medgirl2001-
Sorry about your Avanto Go problem. I haven't used it since they completely redid it a year or so ago. As such, I haven't really followed the threads which might have mentioned this problem.

But, look on the bright side, now you have an excuse to try out some cool RSS readers which you might prefer more than Avant Go anyhow. :approve:

Well, it was fixed with a reinstall of AvantGo. Not that big of a deal.

Well, that's true. AvantGo certainly is buggy and has a lot of issues, but it works fine with the things I get on it, at least for the time being.

I used it with my cache on an SD card for awhile, but that started to cause other problems. I finally gave up and converted to a good RSS reader

Thanks for the info. I love learning about different programs. I'll file this one away for the future.
