It sounds to me more like you are having a problem with the USB connection on your laptop than with active sync. I would check to see what USB devices are recognized in your device manager, whatever is there you may want to remove and let the device reinstall when you connect the Axim next time. Also, just for troubleshooting purposes, what happens when you connect a USB mouse or keyboard?
