If you start the install process through ActiveSync and cancel it, a CAB for that .exe file will be created and can be found in one of the ActiveSync folders.

IZArc

Yep, the old "puttin' on the brakes" method of .cab extraction .

I will throw this out: There have been times where I've been able to use IZArc to squeeze the .cab files out of a .exe installer. Best of all, IZArc is freeware :)

Sort of, yes, except that a .CAB has sort of installation instructions in it that tell the OS where to put the files, AFAIK. There are also programs that will "juice" .exe files to find any recognizable files within it and extract them, including .cab and .zip files. I don't know a specific one that runs in Windows, but FileJuicer is a very nice example that runs on Macs.

So you can install programs without being connected to a PC.

So after you get the cab files of all the programs you need. Put them on a folder on your SD/CF card and keep them there. Get a program named CabInstal (a cab file) and keep that there too. Now after a hard reset you can reinstal every program you had before, without the need for a Desktop PC, good if you travel a lot. CabInstal also allows you to instal to a specific folder you choose. (Make one for each program you are going to instal in advance, also with CabInstal check "Do not delete cab files" so you can keep them in that folder for next time.)

I doubt there is a file extraction tool that actually runs on the axim. Would be pretty big, but if you had a SD or CF card I guess it wouldn't be a big deal. I doubt the Axim has enough power to seriously take a .exe file and extract the .cab file out of it in a serious amount of time.

Just my two cents.
