I can personally recommend http://www.pocketgamer.org as specially adapted for the Pocket PC. You can switch between short summaries and full news items, and turn images on and off.

Google provides "mobile" proxy type of resizing/reformatting service.
Any page you go through the search will be formatted to fit to PDA screens.

www.hackaday.com has a mobile portal i think, or atleast its normal portal works ok on my axim...
