Question In-House Walkie Talkie Replacement??

We currently use 20 x X50v in our restaurants for our POS application. Senior staff also carry walkie talkies for communication with the kitchens and food runners.

It's time to replace the walkie talkies. Can anyone recommend a software-based solution that would give us the ability to use our Axims like walkie talkies? We would need multiple channels, where each channel would support multiple (> 2) Axim units.

This is strictly an in-house application. I have found a couple of services that appear to offer what we want, but their servers are in Europe or the USA (we're in Hong Kong). I cannot consider having 20 machines communicating with servers half the world away for the purpose of communicating with each other 5 feet away.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Maybe something like
http://www.pocketpccity.com/software...-pocketpc.html

Not free, but audio message exchange over bluetooth sounds like a nice low power solution with reasonable range. Just so long as you use X50's with WM2003se and not WM5 (bluetooth suckiness issue).....

-=Edit=-
Possibly better to go to the source.

Have you thought of using skype? I am not sure if it would work for everything you need, but it is an idea.

How about http://research.microsoft.com/mcom/portrait/, which is freeware and has PPC support? If you set up an ad-hoc network, you wouldn't need other equipment. Or, if you buy a $20 router, you could use WiFi range and infrastructure mode. Should work with any PPC that can use WiFi.
