Putting Word / Excel on SD or CF Cards

This has probably been discussed before, but I did my obligatory 30 minute scan of this forum and couldn't find it so here goes!

I'm new to the Pocket PC and I would like to use my CF card to store a lot of my Word and Excel documents.

The way I understand it, is that these have to be translated to the Pocket PC Word and Excel file formats. One way to do that is to drop them in the file transfer folder (true / false?) but then they would be in main memory.

I tried dropping a Word document on my desktop Windows Explorer to a CF or SD card but it did not allow that.

So, any help for this relative newbie is very welcome. Also, is there a tutorial or some place I can find this information?

Thanks!

I store my word documents on my SD card. I created a directory called "My Documents" and save all my documents there. I also store my .tsk (theme) files there as well. Make sure that you remove the ignore my docs folder. Themes and documents are used by the system as if they were stored in main memory.

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your response. I tried creating a My Documents directory using Windows Explorer, and could not do it. Where is the "ignore my docs folder". Also, are documents stored on a SD card backed up (I know the ones in the main memory get sync'd to the folder on the desktop, but I don't know how changes would be transferred from the SD card to the desktop).

Thanks for your patience as I try to understand this.

Hmmmm.... I am using an x50v wm03se, so I don't know if these programs work with wm5. All of my comments are working on the PDA, with programs that reside on the PDA.

I do not use the PDA file explorer. I use Total Commander for ppc (freeware). I was able to make the My Documents folder (from the PDA)(not using activesync) on the CF card. Sometimes the system makes the ignore my docs folder, sometimes not. If not, don't worry about it. (the ignore_my_docs file is a 0 length file that basically tells the operating system to ignore the my documents folder when looking for files.) The key is having the My Documents folder.

Again, I do not use the native activesync back up software and only sync my calendar and selective contacts. I use Sprite Backup for software and PDA health. Using their option for persistent storage you can choose to back up BIS, the CF and/or SD, along with the registry and other database files.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again. I will get Sprite Backup -- it's great that it can back up the SD and / or CF. My 1G CF will stay resident in the Axim I think, used mainly for any files I want to keep around (like Word, Excel, other apps). The SD card will be where I put music. At least that's the plan for now.

You can not automatically "sync" files to a storage card. You need to manually copy the files you want to the storage card. Just as Jrnytolife explains it...

Insert your Storage Card, using the file explorer on the Pocket PC go to the storage card and look for a file named "ignore my docs" delete it and create a new folder named "My Documents" you can store all your documents there and the pocket pc should be able to see them at all times too.

Just a couple of points:

1. Sprite for WM5 is currently in beta; many people have found Sunnyside Backup better with WM5.

2. It IS possible to sync to SD/CF card but this requires a third party utility such as MobSync (freeware).

Thanks for the info. I dowloaded MobSync and it looks good. Is there any other software you can recommend to a newbie to get up to speed? If so please either post or e-mail jrny_of_life@charter.net.

Thanks!
