Hello everyone, I thought I would post some of the different configuration options for Opera 8.5b that I have found. These changes are through editing the .ini files directly and not through the built-in "settings" option.
PLEASE NOTE: Making changes to the settings do not seem to be case sensitive but just to be cautious, try to keep everything similar in fashion such as capitalizing the first letter of a parameter. Also note that I tested all of these settings but there could easily be issues or variances from WM2003se version to WM5.
Page UP/Down/Left/Right a full screen at a time
By default Opera moves to the next object on the web page as you press the up, down, left, right buttons. This modification will scroll an entire page as you press each button.
1) Edit the "input.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[Browser Widget]" group
3) Change "Down = Navigate down" to "Down = Page down"
4) Change "UP = Navigate up" to "UP = Page up"
5) Change "Left = Navigate left" to "Down = Page left"
6) Change "Right = Navigate right" to "UP = Page right"
Turn off the scroll bars
This turns off the up/down scroll bars and gets some screen space back for viewing. This works great in conjunction with the modification listed above.
1) Edit the "opera.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[User Prefs]" group
3) Change "Show Scrollbars=1" to "Show Scrollbars=0"
Cycling between multiple Opera Windows
This already exists with your default configuration. Simply bring up the soft-keyboard and press "8".
To change the default key that switches between windows do the following:
1) Edit the "input.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[WinCE Application]" group
3) Change "8 = Cycle to next window" to whatever number or letter that you would prefer.
NOTE: You can use words like "Tab", "Enter" or "Space" to indicate that specific key. I like using the big buttons like "Space" to toggle between screens. These buttons can be done with many of the other options on this page.
ALSO NOTE: The page needs to have focus for this option to work. If you have a text box selected when typing these letters/buttons, it will simply enter into the text field and not be seen as a special command. In other words, if it doesn't work, tap on a blank part of the web page and then try it again.
Open a new URL quickly
This already exists with your default configuration. Simply bring up the soft-keyboard and type "1".
To change the default key do the following:
1) Edit the "input.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[WinCE Application]" group
3) Change "8 = Cycle to next window" to whatever number or letter that you would prefer
Open a "Window List" of open browser windows
This already exists with your default configuration. Simply bring up the soft-keyboard and type "9".
To change the default key do the following:
1) Edit the "input.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[WinCE Application]" group
3) Change "9 = Show window list" to whatever number or letter that you would prefer
Show Opera's Help file
This already exists with your default configuration. Simply bring up the soft-keyboard and type "0".
To change the default key do the following:
1) Edit the "input.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[WinCE Application]" group
3) Change "0 = Show Help" to whatever number or letter that you would prefer
Toggle FullScreen Mode
This is setup for phone based users. By pressing the "*" on the phone pad you will toggle between full-screen and normal display.
To change the default key do the following:
1) Edit the "input.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[WinCE Application]" group
3) Change "F8 = Enter fullscreen | Leave fullscreen" to whatever number or letter that you would prefer
Toggle Fit-to-Screen (Mediumscreen) Mode
This is setup for phone based users. By pressing the "#" on the phone pad you will toggle between fit-to-screen and normal layout.
To change the default key do the following:
1) Edit the "input.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[WinCE Application]" group
3) Change "F9 = Enable mediumscreen mode | Disable" to whatever number or letter that you would prefer
COOL TRICK: With this option you can specify the middle button of your controller to toggle between the two modes. Simply change the option to "Enter = ...". Unfortunately, I really wanted this to work for "Full Screen" toggle option as it will switch to full screen mode but will not switch back. What's with that?
Change the amount of data cached on your PDA
By increasing the "cache" size your browser keeps more copies of images, web pages and such that you have viewed. The next time the same image or web page is browsed, Opera does not have to download an it and simply loads it straight from your PDA. So, larger is faster.
1) Edit the "Opera.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[Disk Cache]" group
3) Change "Size=2000" to whatever value that you would prefer NOTE: Keep in mind that this is how much storage space is being used on your PDA so, don't set it too high. Probably 8000 should be the maximum value.
Move data and cache around to save memory
By default Opera installed a bunch of files and keeps cache in precious application data space (RAM). At least with the WM2003se version. By moving all of these files to a CF Card or SD memory stick you free up valuable RAM.
1) Edit the "Opera.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[User Prefs]" group
3) Change "Opera Directory=\Application Data\Opera" to a location that you would prefer such as "\cf card\opera"
4) Change "Help Directory=\Application Data\Opera\Help" to a location that you would prefer such as "\cf card\opera\help"
5) Move the following files and folders to the location that you specified above:
cach4 (folder)
help (folder)
imgcss (folder)
startpage (folder)
styles (folder)
You are left with these files/folders in "\Application Data\Opera"
skin (folder)
opera6.adr
input.ini
opera.ini
english.lng
Change the drop-down url history length
By default Opera remembers the last 10 websites that you visited in its drop-down navigation bar. You can up that amount by doing the following:
1) Edit the "Opera.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[User Prefs]" group
3) Change "Max Direct History Lines=10" to a number that you would prefer such as "20"
Change the default download path
By default Opera will download all files to "My Documents". To change this do the following:
1) Edit the "Opera.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[User Prefs]" group
3) Change "Download Directory=\My Documents" to whatever location you would prefer
There are a bunch of other obvious and not so obvious options in the INI files but I'm just running out of time. Don't be afraid to tweak these options as you can always change it back if Opera doesn't properly work afterwards. I hope that this helps people as I've found Opera to be awesome after just a little bit of tweaking. Please post other options and ideas. Or, correct anything that I have messed up here.
Have fun! :approve:

Reason: Better explanations
Wow, cool and thanks guys. I'm just trying to share what I've found so far. I do love scrolling by entire pages rather than by link and it is what started it all.

I'm using Axim X30.
My Opera's main program is actually installed in my Storage Card (\Storage Card\Opera). And I've followed exactly the steps to edit "opera.ini" to try to move my cache to the cf card (this path: \Storage Card\Opera). However, Opera seems NOT to follow my settings in "opera.ini" and just creat another "cache4" folder and also other files in "\Application Data\Opera" everytime I run the program. Is there any way to solve this? Thx so much!

Pardon me for stating the obvious: shouldn't your path be \CF Card\Opera ?
Try to verify the path again, moving the files and folders directly there.
For some reason whenever I type in Opera and add a space it adds two spaces. Is there something I can change to fix this? It is fairly annoying. It happens regardless of the type of input, keyboard, block recognizer or transcriber. I look through the .ini files for something but no luck.
I applaud the step by step guide to stop activesync from syncing every 5 minutes. I could follow that one. Am I the only one who had trouble getting Opera 8.5 as well as wisbar and other skins (tsk. files) to work?
If the instructions involve anything other than click the exe. file, I am lost.
Is opera and/or all the other complicated applications/browsers/utilities ever going to just have a point and click installation? Am I dreaming or just PDA stupid?
Is there a setting to change the visited links' colour into a different colour (i.e red, purple etc.) so when you press a link the colour would change notifying the link was pressed... Am I making any sense?

Jukov, good question.
I have been playing with a "cascading style sheet" configuration that Opera 8.5b uses. At least it looks like it is suppose to use this file since it is located in a sub-folder of where Opera is installed. It's called "\styles\wml.css" and should control a variety of default web page items. But, no matter what I do to the file such as change all fonts to red and super large size, there is no effect. I can even delete the file and Opera continues on with no difference. So, I guess this beta version just doesn't use it yet.
If it did work, simply change the area that says:
a:visited {
color: purple;
}
to
a:visited {
color: red;
}
The above color can be anything that you want and can also use hexadecimal values such as "color: #FF0000".
Maybe I'm missing something or maybe this only works when a web page doesn't supply its own ".css" file.
