Then when you copy over a book, it will activate the device again for you.
The PC software can even download and install the PPC software for you.

Good point! I actually had to call them to reset my activations..didn't even think about deactivating to avoid that. Here is the response I got from Audible about saving activations:
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Unfortunately, there is currently no fix to resolve this issue. When your PDA
is rebooted, it clears the activation of your account on the PDA. Our files are
proprietary, and therefore need to be activated in order for you to access
them. You are allowed a maximum of 3 device activations per account,
therefore, the AudiblePlayer application on your PC recognizes your device as
if it were a new device. If we allowed users to save the activation file, a
user would be able to transfer the activation file to multiple devices and they
would be able to access your account as well. We need to keep our content
protected this way in order to prevent piracy.
