Toshiba e750, 30 Gb HDD, DeJe mass storage driver :

"Well, here's the results of my latest test. I created a large, movie-length avi file using DeJe's Divx encoding guide. I encoded to 320X176, frame rate of 22 fps using a bit rate of 362 kbps. Audio is MPEG Layer-3, 56kbps at 24000 Hz. stereo.

The avi file came out to be 371078 KB (2 hours 18 minutes running time length).

I then played the avi spinning off the USB disk. Results are:

Dropped: 0
Played: 182299
Total: 182299
Ave FPS: 22

I think both the bit rate and frame rate can be pushed higher. As time permits I'll encode at higher rates and test.

So, there you have it. The battery operated Tripper with 30 GB hard drive can serve as a "USB media server" for the e750, storing hundreds of MP3, MPEG and AVI files."

OK here is where it specifically says it won't work with USB Hard Drives

USB 1.1 Host Adaptor CF Card User Manual

Look at page 6...

Storage devices such as hard disk drives don't run with the CFU1U.

Yes, I saw it.

I hope it means HD Drives, requiring over 100 mA, must have some own power supply.

Look, I'd love to be able to hook my usb hd up to the axim from time to time, but I don't think this card is the solution. It seems like its aimed at those who want to either hook up their digital camera or their GPS unit.

Someone should write them and see if they plan to release a version that would handle HDs...

Where can I find a USB for 30? I looked a bit but found them running aroudn 50? Likewise where is a good price on a firewire external?

Thanks

I hang out at the Hot Deals forum at Anandtech, and I've seen them for that price. Maybe $50 on the spot isn't so bad.

Isn't the CF slot ATA compliant? Couldn't you just "rig" a hardrive to the CF slot? I have a passive adapter that converts a laptop "mini" drive port to CF so why couldn't the opposite be done? You would need an external power supply for the drive, but it could be an easy 10/20/40 GB back up drive with a much faster transfer. Any takers :) ?

haven't seen any of those... i've seen laptop mini (2.5") to standard converts aka slimline laptop IDE converter from http://www.mini-itx.com/

btw
I/O Magic has a nice slimline 2.5" enclosure for USB 2.0 at around $50.00... I believe CompUSA sells them.

Designed to support the latest and fastest ATA133 (IDE) hard drives, this external 2.5” ATA hard drive conversion kit provides the USB 2.0 interface to connect to both Mac and PC. The data stored on the hard drive is fully accessible with either OS, and do not require separate partition. With a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/s on USB 2.0 interface, you are guaranteed superior performance with any system.

ahh... ok. how about this frankenstein!?

use the Pocket ExDrive to PCMCIA connection kit:
http://www.addonics.com/products/ext...et_exdrive.asp

and tag it to a PCMCIA AND CF CARD EXTENDER:
http://www.papyrus.co.il/Products/pcmcia_extenders.htm

but who would provide the driver to read that conduit...

Here's a good link for what I'm describing:
http://www.tapr.org/tapr/html/Fcfa.html

Seems like you could do the oppisite since the CF cards have IDE controllers, but I have yet to find an actual adapter...

Here's some other good links, but no direct CF adapter...yet...
http://www.tjotala.com/hardware/stor...ck/default.htm
http://www.aemmenet.ch/Publikationen/CFtoIDEpinout.html

Still looking...might experiment...

Here's what I've been looking for, now to find the hardware to make it work:
http://lillith.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp/~kas.../cfide-sch.pdf

My intention is not to use a USB adapter; why spend $xxx on to convert ATA to USB to ATA. Plus there will certainly be speed advantages to a direct connection and battery preservation on the Axe (using external batteries for the drive). Somebody has to have tried this before???

the trick is going to be keeping the wire distance at a minimum due to power consumption. the other option is to wait for this... hopbit. it's in japan now but might make it here. it's a bluetooth hard drive mentioned back in january i believe.

Question What if your Harddrive is already powered?

What if your Harddrive is already powered?
I just got my Nomad Jukebox 3 and it has a Lithium Ion Battery by itself and is supposed to be able to store other data than just musik. With a CF to USB adapter with both ends powered they should be able to communicate and that at great speeds. I don't have my Axim yet but I'll sure try that!!

ide

I'm trying wcnc's plans soon, and I'll try to take pictures. I'm having a little trouble understanding the plans, but the worst is that I have been unable to find a CF connector. I might take apart an old 32M memory card, but does anyone know how to take one apart? It looks seamless.
