wireless peer to peer

I establiehed a wireless peer to peer connection between a laptop and the axim using an Ambicom 82011.b CF card and a Linksys PC 82011.b card. I can do wireless syncing (established an ad-hoc conenction) BUT I cant seem to get the inernet connection to work. It works fine (both active sync and inernet connection) when I use the cradle. But thru the wireless thing, its active sync that works, no internet. My OS is 98 2nd e. Please help. :hide:

I've been working on this myself because I'm out of town with Internet access in my hotel room. Took me awhile to get it figured out, but it works now. At first I was like you, syncing wirelessly was working fine, but no Internet. Here's what I did....

Running WinXP on my laptop that has a ethernet card and WiFi card. Click Start | Control Panel | Network Connections. Select the LAN conneciton icon, not the wireless one. In the left pane click Change Settings of this Connection. Now click the Advanced tab and check Allow other network users to Connect thru this Computers Internet Connection. Click Ok. This will change your IP to 192.168.0.1 on the wifi card. That's it for the laptop.

Before configuring the Ax open a DOS window and type ipconfig /all. Write down the DNS server IP addresses, there should be at least two.

Now for the Ax. Click Start|Setting|Connections tab and then the Network Adapters icon and then select your network adapter and click Properties. Select Use Specific IP address and enter 192.168.0.2 for the IP Address, 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask, and 192.168.0.1 for the Default Gateway. Now click the Name Servers tab. In the DNS fields, enter the IP addresses of the two DNS servers that you wrote down previously. Close the adapter config screen, and pull out your wifi CF card and re-insert it.

You should now have internet on your Ax over the adhoc.

Note that the address on my laptop, 192.168.0.1 might be differnet on yours if there are other pc's involved. Basically, whatever ip is assigned to the wifi card on the host machine must be used for the default gateway on the Ax.

Let me know how you make out...

That you for that! I actually got it to work, but not entirely like that. I actually didn't use the DNS servers from IPCONFIG /ALL, I access my router control panel and used those DNS servers. That seemed to work. (I don't know why those DNS's would be different though...)

I am not very much familiar with network configuration, but I would like to confirm whether you checked "Settings" "Connections." I guess the bottom one should be"The Internet."

Well, probably you checked everything...and I may be wrong:rolling:

I see. I hope you can solve the problem. As a reference, my WiFi card is Linksys WCF12. I personally don't use Axim for internet browsing, but this card works.

Dear all,
After I search about this issue from this website, it really help me to setup peer to peer connection between my axim and my laptop. I could surf internet but can't see any folder or sync between two machines. Another issue, This working only " WEP disable mode". My question are:
1. How can I keep this connection in WEP enable mode (I did try to set WEP (64/128 bit) in both laptop and axim but it won't work)
2. How can I figure out to sync. or transfer files between axim and laptop.

My internet connection is dial up.
Thank in advance ;-)

Did you try using a password to set up WEP? I've had problems with WiFi equipment from different companies working that way. What should work is to enter the encryption key in hexidecimal mode (0-9 and a-f).

Also, look at the post by Sevenfive about half way down this thread. He has some very clear instructions for WiFi set up.

ikehiker, I follow the instructions from your link.
I installed pockethost and configure it as you suggest.
Here is what happened:

1. I could sync when with the connection setting of work/work/internet but can't surf internet with this connection setting

2. I changed the connection setting to internet/work/internet. This time I could surf internet but no ability to sync.

Am I on track?

Another question is when i setup password with 16 characters as you suggest >>> my laptop was crash 3 times. (But earlier,I used to set only 13 characters it no crash but connection won't work)

Any suggestion?
Thank you very much

I'm at a loss on the settings issue. It seems to be a good sign that you can get both Internet and Syncing accomplished, even if it isn't with the same settings. What's strange is most people (connecting by WiFi through a router) have success with work settings, work settings, work. I'll look around a bit and see if I can come up with any answers to that.

As I understand it, for the WEP, the keys need to be exactly 13 (for 64-bit) or 26-chararacters (for 128). I'm not sure why 16-characters would cause the PC to crash except it's not a valid key.

You will not be able to see the Axim folder/files from the PC (except through ActiveSync's Explorer), but you can set up shared folders on the PC that can be accessed from the Axim. The procedure varies a bit depending on the version of Windows you are using but it is done through the network setup. If you have trouble figuring it out, post back with your Win version and I should be able to lead you through it.
