I backup the SD and CF cards (which include the backups done by Sprite and Spb Backup) to my PC via USB card readers. See the link in my View MyPDA on Backups for the entire strategy.
The only password I am aware in Spb Backup is related to encrypting the backup data. As I'm running WM2K3.2 rather than WM5 I don't run the latest Sprite product.
1) cannot back up the SD/CF with SPB v1.0 -> when select backup...all you can choose is \SYSTEM and not \SD or \CF. Your backup strat is something else??
question #2: How do you DISABLE the password thing on Sprite WM 5 before backing up? With SPB, you can choose to put a password or not...with Sprite, it seems like you HAVE to put a password or it won't proceed any further.
any input?
To my understanding, you cannot turn off the encryption on the Sprite backup. This was something new they put into this version. Sort of a pain if you forget the password

This doesn't appear to be an option with Spb. Usually (whenever I think about it), I just copy everything from my cards via card reader to a .zip file and store that on my file server...

I use Sprite with much success. In the version which I use, soft reseting is an option you can set when scheduling the daily backups.
Yea, the wm2003se (3.1.4) version is great... but they've made some changes for WM5 - which really does alter the backup proceedure, which is what most people seem to be discussing / struggling with.

Yes. I set an alarm for just after when the Spb Backup should have started and that seemed to nudge it past the delay (presumably due to my having a password set on my PDA) and it took the backup then. You might try it and see if that is a consistent effect or it it only works for me.
Well, it's one for one. I had SPB scheduled for 11:15 pm and added an alarm at 11:20pm. The scheduled backup completed on time. Very nice tip! Don't know if I will both, but I imagine this tip would work for Sprite, too.

Please read my backup strategy referenced earlier. I do not wish to back up SD nor CF cards that way, so even if Sprite or Spb Backup provided that capability, I would not activate it.

To turn off encription in Sprite Backup 5 - Backup Options > General Backup Options > deselect Encript Backups.

Yes, it has been very consistent for me. I set the backup to start at 06:06 daily and created a daily recurring appointment for 06:10 with a five minute advance (06:05) and the backup runs uninterrupted and not delayed even though I have a password set on my X50V (WM2K3.2).
I doubt this temporary work-around will be needed for very long; Spb is quite responsive.

It was two for two, but failed last night. I woke up to the backup starting. A couple of things to note, I do NOT have the alarm starting before the backup (like you do), I have it going off a few minutes after the backup. I also leave my pda on battery overnight.
I'll try changing the alarm time and see if it can be more consistent. But even 66% working is better than the 0% working without the alarm.
I did submit a ticket with SPB and their answer was that it was a problem with WM2003 and WM5 and there wasn't anything they could do. I got that same response from Sprite
