Without the PDA attached, Open ActiveSync on the PC, Select Options, Select Contacts, Select Settings.
Do you have Sync All Contacts checked?
More importantly, under the list of categories that could be selected, are the new categories there? I'll bet not, or if they are, they're not syncing.
Perhaps syncing just those categories once, as described here, would realign everything?

Sync All Contacts is checked. All categories are present.
I just pulled up all contacts in a different category, China. There are 23 contacts. I then typed notes in Outlook in one of the contacts and pressed save. The contact was unaffected in both PI and Outlook. So this problem is not with all categories, just categories created after we did that organising trick I pointed out above in the 13th post.
You might be able to force them to sync as described before. Alternately, you could ungroup them (or perhaps re-group those created since) and see if that removes the interference. In any case, this warrants escalation with WebIS for clarification at the very least.

From the movie Say Anything, "strange things are afoot at the Circle K..."
Well, in Outlook I filtered my Mo Trip contacts, so it displayed all 21. I then added a new category to all of them called MissouriTrip on the desktop Outlook. This not only synced to PI, it worked w/the contacts.
I filtered the contacts in PI to show the new category. I then added notes to these contacts in Outlook and the contacts in PI didn't disappear. I then added notes to one contact in the Axim and a funny thing happened. That contact disappeared from my desktop outlook. My desktop Outlook, you recall, was filtered for MoTrip, not the new category, MissouriTrip, so MoTrip category unchecked itself and it disappeared.
I then filtered the contacts in Outlook to show MissouriTrip and everything worked fine.
Moral of the story? I think I originally added the MoTrip category to Outlook and it didn't work properly so I manually added it to PI. So I'd have to say you have to add categories to one or the other but not both. I might go so far as to say that you should only add new categories to the desktop Outlook. If anyone knows more please share. For now I believe my problem is solved and I'm grateful to you helpers and actresses.

I usually add everything in PI (categories, etc.), but tried adding one in Outlook just to see what the Axim would do. I added a new contact, created a new category for it, and then sync'd the Axim. The new info and the new category showed up in PI. But then I also changed my settings to sync Notes (I had turned off that option earlier because of problems) ... and ActiveSync terminated - uh-oh!! Can't get Notes to sync at all, but that's another problem. Sounds like you got your PI problem solved for the time being!

Webis emailed me back quickly, "Yes, unfortunately, ActiveSync is well known to have problems synching
categories. But there is not anything we can do about this." Is anyone else experiencing this difficulty?

That's not encouraging. I'm using AS 3.8, not sure if that makes a difference or not. I haven't noticed a problem with my categories, but will watch more closely now.

I'm not having any problems with categories in Outlook or PI, but I will admit my contacts (900+) and categories (12) are pretty static.
