Have you considered ripping them into OGG Vorbis format? Since you're starting from CD, you can get the best quality per MB. It's considered superior to MP3, and free encoders are out there.

FYI... If you are not running Win XP on your desktop, Windows Media Player can only rip to MP3 if you have v.10 (XP only) or if you purchase ($15-20) a plugin for previous versions.
But if you are ripping for your Ax them WMA from a previous Media Player are fine.

IF you want more portability than just use on your Ax, then MP3 is most widely used.
I think mp3 or wma are fine. MP3 can be played in just about anything, where wma is a format owned by ms, so less players support it. But either play fine on the axim.

Wma is the way to go they take up alot less space than mp3 because u can get a cd quality file with a bitrate of as low as 48kbps whereas mp3 doesnt reach cd quality till 192kbps.
