Monitoring Hurricanes - Weather Programs

Hurricane season is around the corner.

I'm currently using Spb's "Weather", on trial. It's a solid program. However, I didn't notice any ability to connect with any service that tracks or forecasts hurricanes...National Hurricane Center...Gulf or Atlantic satellite imagery, etc.

Does Spb's competitor, SBSH Pocket Weather do this? Are you aware of any other programs that have this feature?

SBSH Pocket Weather will display earthquakes (provided the Display Earthquake tab in Weather Console Setup is checked) but NOT hurricanes.

SBSH PocketWeather will however allow you to display any downloadable image from the internet. So you could easily add "http://tsr.mssl.ucl.ac.uk/tracker/dynamic/images/current.png" (or similar) and keep track that way.

Hope that helps

I have tried to add http://tsr.mssl.ucl.ac.uk/tracker/dy...es/current.png but when I tap on Update I get "Invalid URL" Address http://tsr.mssl.ucl.ac.uk/tracker/dy...es/current.png returned inalid result.

Any ideas?

Edit : Sorry - it does work. But the image is very small and hard to read.

It works for me.

Which version of SBSH PocketWeather are you using? The current version is V1.3.2.

As I said in my Edit to my earlier post #5 above, it DOES work for me. But the image I get is full screen width but only about a quarter of the screen height. This makes it difficult to read. Is there any way to zoom it?

I was running Version 1.3.0 but I have now upgraded to 1.3.2. Many thanks for the heads up and the link. It makes no difference to the Hurricanes display.

PocketWeather is a really great application.:approve:

OK...I've completed my free trial of SBSH PocketWeather, and based on my good experience, purchased it.

It does everything I was asking about in terms of downloading weather radar images (in .gif format). Any .gif image can be downloaded. PocketWeather can enlarge or reduce the image via the two magnifying glasses on the bottom left of the image screen. It can put a .gif image into motion (even though the instructions give the impression it can't to those of us who might not be up on all the image lingo) by saving the last several images downloaded and running them in sequence ala time lapse photography. I look forward to the National Hurricane Center images (I hope they are .gifs) to show the forcast tracks that are downloaded.

I have one or more radar images set up for the four areas of the country where I am interested in the weather. It is a fantastic program. It is interesting to experiment with the various weather radar options out there to determine the degree of detail and frequency of updates they provide.

Does anyone have any comprehensive listing/description of the various weather radar web site characteristics?

The updates to the radar site addresses I've selected update about once an hour. I have the weather program set for the most recent 6 images, although it looks like you can set for any number from 1 to dozens, limited by your memory space. It will synch and update the images whether cradled or through wifi/bluetooth.

Anyone out there familiar with .jpg weather sites oriented to tropical storms and hurricanes, please post. I'm looking for more.

One site for the Gulf of Mexico that works well and looks good is:
http://maps.wunderground.com/data/640x480/2xg1_ir.gif

Another for the north Gulf coast is:
http://image.weather.com/web/radar/u...large_usen.jpg

Let me know how these work for you.:)

Its nothing to write home about on the today screen...I tiny quarter inch by quarter inch segment of your total image...its enough to serve as an icon to tap to get your larger image.

But you can configure SBSH PocketWeather to have any size icons for the today screen - go to PocketWeather settings, select the "Images" tab, and set the "Icon size" to something larger. I have 230 for my X50v (VGA) device.

The URLs I use for the UK are:

http://www.metoffice.com/weather/eur...a/3EF_PS_0.GIF
http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/./bracka.gif

For the US, I have found this one is "nice", although large:

http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/pdus/EV/latest.jpg (requires free registration)

Hope that helps.
