I'm a little slow in fidning out that there's actually a Palm emulator for the PPC!
Does anyone use this emulator? Is it any good? How is the performance?
Also, are there any worthwhile programs on the Palm platform that aren't available on PPCs? (I'm sure there are)
Hi,
Sure do - Styletap is awesome (well at least for the software that I use). I'm a pilot and use it mainly for flight-planning and aircraft weight & Balance calculations. There are some great free Palm applications that will never be ported and this enables me to use them flawlessly.
Have you used your programs on an actual Palm? Is there any difference in speed and/or functionality?
G'Day STi Sev,
Thanks for the welcome.
Actually, I just switched about a week ago from an old Palm OS Sony Clie to an X51v. Until then, I was using the Clie all the time. In all honesty, I can't believe how well Styletap was conceived/implemented. Admittedly, the programs that I'm running are older Palm apps (OS 4.1 I think) yet they run quickly and without a hitch. Honestly, if it weren't for Styletap, I wouldn't have switched to WM5 - the Palm programs that I do use are just far too useful to me.
Having recently switched to WM5, I can say that I'm appalled by how unstable the Microsoft OS is and by how 'non-user-friendly' ActiveSync is. Palm may not be perfect but they certainly knew what they were doing with Handhelds.

I use Styletap on a daily basis for some Palm databases which have no PPC equivalent, and it has been running very well. I have been surprised at how quickly it runs and how well it integrates with the OS, and registered the program very early. The latest version has also improved the speed of opening applications.
My previous PDA was also a Sony Clie. My current device is the X50v with WM2003SE, and this has been very stable for me... as stable as the Clie was. The only thing I miss about the Clie was the wonderful scroll wheel, which was really great for one handed reading. I would agree that Activesync sux compared to Hotsync with Backup Buddy.
Some on this site will try to convince others that WM5 on the X51 is as stable as WM2003SE... I would tend to disagree.
One word of advice... If you have a X50v, install the program onto an external memory card such as SD or CF. I initially installed it into Built In Storage and it ran very slowly. On an external memory card, it was very quick.
Can't comment about the X51 however.
StyleTap is great. I've used it with several games/apps; for example, with EDGE ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ind...3&p=349&more=1 ; the article also contains links to my previous StyleTap compatibility reports.)
Another happy StyleTap user here. While it is still considered "BetaWare", I have had no problems at all on my X51v.
For any cinematographers or video shooter, you absolutely must get this if you aren't using a palm device. David Eubanks has created some indispensible tools for the professional. You can get them from his site for free and of course if you use them, please support him
I use it only for Day Notez. Everyday. I just wished it emulated OS 5! Also I really hate the fonts that they use. Other then that it is pretty good and it was about to run NESEm pretty flawlessly.

Hi Airborneaussie, really curious what programs you use for W&B and flight planning. I have been researching alot for programs for these and I am having trouble figuring out which are the good ones.
Cheers
Styletap was a welcome tool for me as I made the conversion from palm to windows mobile. Luckily I managed to make that conversion before the trial expired because there is no way a poor college student like me could afford a $50 program. Is it still going for ~$50?
