I see there is a newer version of Calligrapher (8.2) - I am wondering what other peoples opinions are.
I have an older version but gave up on it. It seemed like it was transcriber with extra features. I was looking for something that was better then transcriber. Besides the thing took a lot of memory.
So what real handwriting recognition improvements does 8.2 have over transcriber?
So far tengo and SOB full screen keyboard are my primary data entry.
it's like transcriber on steroids, also has its own write pad sip, and can understand my handwriting! and works great in vga.
if you tried it prior to version 8 it might be time for another go
also ha

It doesn't require installation into main memory and works so much better then transcriber. I colodn't imagine my Axim without it.
The pen commander is fantastic. I can do simple commands and shortcuts with a real quick word. Being able to open a keyboard without changing my SIP is great. Plus, when you use the caps lock key you still see number in the top row rather then the shift symbols. This is great for entering key codes and such.
I love the built in calculator while I'm typing and the spell check and correction pad. Calligrapher is a very well written program and worth every penny.
BTW, it can recognize some handwriting that transcriber hasn't a chance with.

I've been using it since the sale they had at the start of the year - and once you have it trained (3 weeks or so in my case), it's damned near magic. It can actually understand my sloppy writing and translate it, 85-90% of the time. :D Heck, anyone who could do that's already pulling miracles if they were human... and having a program do that? It's bloody miraculous, that's what.
I tried calligrapher 8 for a couple of days and found it worse at recognising my writing than the built in WM5 transcriber! ......and it wasn't as easy to use!
I want to second that! I found Calligrapher to be a very poor example of software. It didn't do anything more than transcriber, it was much worse in terms of handwriting recognition, and it cost $$$. I uninstalled it after one day.
Frankly, I have gone with the SPB fullscreen keyboard for data entry. All the handwriting software for the PDA is poor compared with a tabletpc.
I have tried Calligrapher over the years and always found it wanting. From my less than scientific survey, it seems lefties like me have far less success with this program than righties. The writepad included with v8 initially made all the difference. I could see my errors and correct them and had more control over the program. I was happy, plunked down my cc and bought the program. Over time I found that while I might be getting 80%+ accuracy, that 10%-20% inaccuracy was a pain in the butt. When I'm using letter recognizer and make a mistake, I only need to correct a letter. When using Calligrapher, the same mistake often ends up with me clearing the line a few times and then resorting to the keyboard. I'm in numbers mode when I need letters and vice verse and the result is that it takes me longer to enter text than the plain old basic letter recognizer. I've waited patiently for the recognition to improve over time, but it doesn't. It works great if I'm writing a long form note or pocket word document, but this is something I seldom do. It can be very frustrating for filling in name, address and number fields, which make the bulk of my PDA input. I now find myself back with letter recognizer 80%-90% of the time. I 'm definitely suffering buyers remorse with this one.

I love Calligrapher. I am well known for my bad handscript and Calligrapher succeeds to write correctly 90% of it (after minor training). But you have to use Write Pad for some days in order to train it, you cannot train it otherwise.
