Heart SHORT TUTORIAL: Make Free 1 min calls to landline phones (VoIP) for free

This is a short tutorial for those who are interested in making free 1 min calls to selected locations (including USA/Canada) from their PPCs to landline phones (VoIP).

[Note that you CAN extend the services by paying, but in this tutorial we are concentrating on free ]

1. First of all, you have to have working internet connection on your PPC.

2. Download and install SJphone (freeware) on your PPC (go through with the sound setup process).

Download links:
Current stable build
Preview build (including WM5)

3. Go to voipcheap.com and download their software.
[I'm not promoting voipcheap here, just using it as an example for this tutorial. You can choose other service providers if you wish.]

4. Install it on your PC and complete the registration process.

5. Start SJphone on your PPC (again, make sure you have wifi on).

6. Go to Menu > Options > Profiles tab.

7. Tap "New" and give it a profile name (for example "voipcheap") and tap "ok".

8. Now go to the "Sip Proxy" tab and enter connectionserver.voipcheap.co.uk in the "Proxy domain" box and tap "ok" (leave everything else unchanged).

9. You'll be prompted for your voipcheap "Account" and "Password". Enter your ID and password that you set up on your PC (tick "save service info") for voipcheap and tap "ok".

10. You should see your latest profile status is "in use".

11. Tap "ok" to return to main screen. You should see "SIP: registered as" info on the display. If you don't, then close SJphone (make sure you have wifi) and open it again.

12. Now the fun part! Dial any number (you can call yourself to test it) starting with the country code (for Example starting with 1 for USA/Canada) and hit the dial button (top right of your SJphone screen). Is it ringing? :approve:
[Note that the free 1 min calls can be made to some selected countries]

I have been using this for a while, except through sipdiscount.com (it is the same company, it is basicly the same thing). And the call quality is actually pretty good, though there is some lag, for me it is under half a second. But it isn't a replacement for a phone, but it certianly can be useful if you have a good WiFi connection.

And for free there is no way you can go wrong

Nice simple and quick guide :)

Awesome, it works in Alaska! A little choppy, but I will try to tweak my audio settings to get it working better. Tutorial was very helpful, thank you akheron!!

Is DirectX available for PPC? This program checks to see if it there and can't find it on my x50v (2003SE). Perhaps that would improve the incoming audio on calls...

If you can't get it to work check out the free trial of VoIPSurfer

It supports WM5 and has no NAT/Firewall problems. See this thread for more info.

You get that error if the entered registration info is incorrect (voipcheap ID and password in this case). It is not a firewall problem. Try deleting the old profile and create a new profile. Follow the guide carefully and enter your registration info correctly.

Ever wondered how you can take advantage of wi-fi hotspots and make calls to landline phones from your Pocket PC for FREE? Or do you already have a VoIP service that you want to use on the road using your Pocket PC?
On how many wifi hotspots or company's sites did you try this yourself? The SIP protocol this product uses is known and proven to have many issues with NAT traversal and a nightmare to set up for many people. Also you can easily google the answer to the question if SIP will work well on public wifi hotspots or not.

When on the road you are much better off using VoIPSurfer or Skype as they do not have these problems.

Max
PS: You could have had the decency to at least think up your own title for these "news" and not mimic my product slogan and thread title in the announcement section.

Doesn't work - tried everything and still says "Not Registered." Waste of my time, I'll stick with my cell phone.

Edit - I'm an idiot. After some toying around I got it to work! I was able to make calls to cell phones too. This is amazing!
