Password program and scheduled backup

Hi.
I'm starting to use my Pocket PC for "private stuff" (mails mostly), so I recently installed an application that locks the Pocket PC after "x" minutes and asks you for a password.
The problem is that now, when Sprite backup wakes up to take a scheduled backup it stays on the logon screen until I input the correct password... not really the point
Is there a way around this, or is it just not possible to have both, password protected device + scheduled backup?
Thanks!

I don't know what password protected program do you installed. I use the password application that came with Windows Mobile and Sprite Backup, which is scheduled to do a backup everyday. I haven't any trouble with that.

Also, which versions of said programs (and which OS - WM2003se or WM5)? I know that I didn't have any problems using Sprite (3.x) and NiceStart on my iPAQ (WM2003se), but the default WM5 screen prevents SPB Backup from running on my Axim (and Sprite 5.x has to do a soft reset prior to doing a backup, so it locks at that point, too).

I installed "Nice Start" which is supposed to be on top of the Windows password protection.
I've just tried with the Windows password utility and I have the same behaviour (I'm using Windows 2003SE by the way).

I think why it worked on mine was that I didn't lock it before turning it off for the night. So Sprite started up before Nice Start kicked in. At least that's what I assumed happened (it was the middle of the night and I was sleeping - maybe I just had helpful backup gnomes).

But from what I've read (and the answers I've been given), none of the backup apps will run if the device is locked.

I have an x50v wm2003se. I run Pocket Secure and SPB backup (nightly) with no issues. It has saved me more then once.

Nice Start has issues - I had to give it up. Pocket Secure works great!!

Check this our http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=100408

Pocket Secure would be a seemingly perfect app for me if it only had a "bomb" feature that wiped the device following so many incorrect password attempts. I don't know how difficult that would be with WM5, though.

Hi All,

Thanks twmiller for your support! :approve:

I've put a lot of time into Pocket Secure to make it as secure as possible! I had considered using a "bomb" to hard reset after xx attempts at a password, (and still may do it in the future), but for now I feel the security is quite strong.

In the latest version 3.0, http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...=pocket+secure
I added an option to "disable ActiveSync communications". With this option enabled, a hard reset is the only way around the password!

Pocket Secure "plays nice" with Sprite also. It is designed to allow other things to run in the background if needed, and still keep the device secure..... :)

Well, if/when you do, I'll take another look at it. It's the one thing I miss from NiceStart (and just about any security app on the Palm side of things, including the builtin one). The reason being is I like to have strictly numerical passwords (usually 6 digits or so) as they are easy to enter quickly, but obviously they aren't as strong as alphanumeric. So to counteract that inherent weakness in an all numeric password, I would give the would-be hacker only 5-7 tries to get the password before the device is wiped clean.

So right now I'm muddling along with the default security and a stronger alphanumeric password (which takes a while to enter when standing in front of a client who wants me to take down notes on something).
