Free version of Computer Associates etrust Anti-Virus for Pocket PCs
Computer Associates etrust Anti-Virus for Pocket PCs was offered free a couple of years ago and seemed to have disapeared.
But, I discovered that it is being updated regularly and that it is still a free download that does not require a validation code and does not expire.
While the program itself is dated 27-11-2002, it immeadiately updates iself when installed to a 16-10-2005 engine and the latest virus data file (today there is one from 24-04-2006).
The info below refers to Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 but it works fine on my Windows Mobile 5 if I disable the "Monitor File updates" option as this slows down the device considerably.
Thank you for participating in the eTrust Antivirus for Pocket PC special offer!
Did you know that CA's award-winning eTrust Antivirus not only protects Pocket PC devices, it is available for your entire environment including desktops and servers, groupware systems (Lotus Notes/Domino and Microsoft Exchange mail servers), and the gateway.

Anti-virus software is not neccessary for PPC currently... It's merely as waste of system resource.

I do not agree - if you are using wifi/bluetooth (as the stream is not protected by your PC's secutity measures) and expansion cards these are vulnerable as data there cannot be resurrected with a hard reset.
I also feel that if your PPC is using wireless and it is connected to your network you can pass along viruses just as easily - especially if you have it configure to use email too. Now most viruses are not designed for the mobile line of OS yet it's only a matter of time until you see them start to appear.
If you feel like a PPC needs AV protection, I would look towards products from Trend Micro, Symantec, or AirScanner. E-Trust (in my opinion and experience) has always been decidedly crap in the PC antivirus area - I would not count on them to produce an effective product for PDAs ...

There is CURRENTLY 2 registered viruses for PPC, I've never heard of anyone who actually has them. Yes, you might pick up viruses and transfer them to your PC, but what's the chance of that? The only way that the virus can get on your pc is when you transfer the file manually over... I doubt the virus that's so cleverly disguised that you don't even recognize it (assuming you checked the sender, file type, if of the incoming mail etc.) will be pick by the scanner on PPC. Most PPC virus scanner hasn't even been updated in years and they're HIGHLY unreliable. PC virus scanner also would scan most files incoming anyway... Again, I never heard of anyone who actually infected their PC through the axim.

We are using eTrust Antivirus addition for businesses at our school. To date it is the most effective antivirus software I have used. We are protecting over 300 workstations and 10 servers. I like their update engine. It has stopped a number of viruses on our Exchange servers and on the PCs.
I will say that installing patches on the workstations are a pain in the rear. In order to install patches, you basically have to uninstall the software, update your batch files, and reinstall the software.

Then thing about virus passing over to your computer is, I'm sure you have antivirus softwares on your computer and once it goes onto your computer, your antivirus software on your computer should be able to detect the virus and delete it. So what's there to worry about? Provided you update your antivirus virus definitions often.
As for the free antivirus software, I don't mind. It's free anyway. Might not use it now but in the future who knows.

I have been using etrust ezav for several years and it jsut gets better and better, Works great. Tests also rate it highly.

As mentioned above, while the free Computer Associates etrust Anti-Virus for Pocket PCs program is dated 27-11-2002, it immeadiately updates iself when installed to a 16-10-2005 engine and the latest very recent virus data file. Today (06-04-2006) the virus data file is from 30-04-2006.

I agree. It only takes a few malicious bored teenagers somewhere to make things hot for all of us. I would rather be protected.

I still don't think that's good enough. My desktop virus program found new update almost everyday. The only thing that PPC virus scanner can do is screw up and delete my files that doesn't even have viruses.
