It would help the cause if developers avoided using Handango. I wonder if developers were informed that customers would be charged to re-download legally purchased software?
I just heard back from Handango after I wrote them to complain. Here is their response:
"This is a new feature that we are offering. We will be unable to offer you the download without the payment of download protection. As a thank you for your business, on your next Handango.com order please enter the code below for a 10% discount. Please note the code and expiration date. Please add the item(s) you would like to purchase to your cart and enter the code in the white promotion code box. "
They are offering me a limited-time %10 discount. On most products, that relates to a 1 or maybe 2 dollar discount. The protection plan costs $4 upon initial purchase, and $7 after 30 days. So what is a %10 discount going to offer me. It doesn't even cover the initial protection plan cost of a single purchase unless I buy something worth over $40.
What an insult to a 3 or 4 year customer.

I love the part "This is a new feature we are offering". How is this a feature worth paying $4 or $7 per purchase for? What do we get for this feature? I see nothing but them skimming more money, so maybe it is feature, for them.
I do not think it is possible they could treat their customers any worse IMHO. Maybe if they hit our credit cards twice per transaction would be worse, but to tell you the truth, this is how this feels to me, like they are hitting me twice, just for deciding to shop with them when no one else does this.

I found this on Juni's website in regards to the changes made by Handango:
A new feature: You can download the suites from the fileserver even if you bought them from Handango. Use the email address you used at Handago when making the purchase and your Handango order reference number as key. If you bought the Exclusive Skin Collection use your Handango order reference number as key for each of the skin suites.
We implemented this since Handango apparently has started charging people when they try to re-download files after a month after the purchase. Don't buy the Handango download extort...er...protection! :)"
So even the developers are on to this new scam, and are coming up with ways to get around it.

Hopefully this little "feature" will ultimately backfire on Handango! I know I'm not buying from them anymore, even though I make backups of my download files and keep my registration emails. Ultimately it's just an overpriced purchase option of limited value that makes me think they are just looking for ways to get more money out of customers.

Thanks to PocketBrain for bringing the parrot to life!! :)
I bet they are doing this with all software purchased since they implemented the Download Protection plan. Any software purchased before then will be safe. They are quiely screwing all their newest customers. I guess I will no longer be purchasing from Handango either. It's a shame, because I've spent almost $150 at their website since purchasing my first PPC in 2002.
this one reason i don't charge an outright fee for my software.
an interesting thing to note is many people who write apps don't have the luxury of webhosting (although i can't see why not. geocities, websamba, all free) and just let handango and pocketgear handle the hosting for them. i suppose it's less they have to think about.
shame on you, handango.

I am trying to get the word out to all the developers I can. let's send handango a message...
I'm so glad you started this thread! I was pretty peeved about this new download protection they add with the purchase of new software but am really furious now to find that after 30 days you are forced to pay the download protection plus $2.00 more if you want to re-download your previously purchased software again.
Thanks for getting the word out to the developers. If they stop distributing their software thru Handango, they'll eventually have nothing to sell. Serves them right..won't buy from them again.:realmad:
The developer advertize free updates once the software is purchased, or during a full integer release. They work hard to make the software attractive and to keep the price down to a reasonable purchase price.
Along comes Handango, interested in making money with very little work involved past maintaining a storefront. With this low overhead, they are trying to maintain the same or more profit per purchase by holding the software hostage for a fee.
"Purchase Protection" sounds like a politically correct way of saying "Extortion Fee"
This story should be FRONT PAGE.

I just saw this thread, so I surfed over to Handango to see if I was going to get pimped. I purchased an upgrade to SBP Pocket Plus 3.1 on 5/12 and declined the download protection.
I just attempted to download it and it let me have it without trying to charge me. Is this not being consistently applied or something?
