Whenever I enter a BD into the BD field, it automatically becomes recurring. But I found I had to manually enter the BD field by tapping on "Add Field to Editor" at the top of the screen where you enter a new contact.

Ok, this is exactly what I do:

In your Contacts screen, tap New. This should bring you to the screen with the blanks to enter the info. At the very top right, look for "Add Field to Editor". Tap on that and choose Birthday. Then fill in your Contact info with birthday, etc. It should then show the contact's BD every year.

Hm...I found that it didn't work consistently at first when I was modifying an existing contact. Try a soft reset and try again with a new/test contact.

Go into one of your contacts that has the Birthday field. Tap and hold the Birthday field and the context menu will pop up. Choose to 'Always Display' and the birthday field will always be displayed for all current and new contacts.'
