wm5.0 Release Memory.

After using your pocket pc for some time, you have probably noticed that available memory decreases even though all applications have been closed down.

This is not a problem normally and makes your system faster, but what happens if you need to open a memory hungry application or game (e.g Tony Hawk’s pro skater needs 28 MB of RAM)? You need to perform a soft reset, which under wm5.0 takes some time.

This little application depends on windows mobile memory management and tries to free up as much memory as possible.

NOTES:

Tested on Dell Axim x51v.
Save any open documents before running.
Requires .NET Compact Framework 2.0.
Avoid Running Repeatedly as performance can be degraded

If you want to try it visit:

Installation: Just unzip the *.exe, transfer it to your pocket pc and run.

I will try later on my wife's X50v with WM5 to see if it helps her.

S-K-Tools includes a little module called "FreeUP RAM" It works perfect for this.

I think what it does is gobble up memory until WM decides it's time to free up some of what's unused, then it gives the memory back. The difference is reported at the end of the function. Usually, I see 3 MB returned.

Thanks for trying it and taking the time to report back ! The amount of RAM that it will free depends on many things and will not always be the same.

I didn’t know that. I am very proud that a commercial application (developed by experienced people) does pretty much the same thing. I was studying about memory management (WM_Hybernate etc…) and I had the idea to take advantage of this.

I am quite happy with the way this first draft works at the moment. I think I will make some improvements in the near future. As I said the amount that you will get back depends on many things.
