I don't use those programs at ALL. I do use Word though. I read in the manual that they cannot be removed. Is that correct?

Yes, this is true. The shortcuts can be removed, but they cant.

The application is part of the ROM image so it cannot be removed. Also, I doubt you will gain anything removing them.

Mabie a few Mb's of Rom, if that. Cheaper to get a SD card then to spend the time and hassle getting rid of them.
