Aximsitex50icon Can't make up my mind

OK, so I have a little extra money to burn on my Pocket PC, and I am thinking of getting some new utility software. What do you all recommend? I have demo'd and enjoyed three programs:

1. Valksoft Space Reclaimer. This is a great program because it does everything with one click, so it is very easy to use.

2. SK Tools. This is very robust and does a lot more than Space Reclaimer but is not as intuitive to use. A little more complex.

3. The Anton Tomov Package (Pocket Mechanic and Hack Master). These are great programs, but the cost would be considerably more. Are they worth the extra money?

Anyway, just wanted to see what your thoughts all were on these three and what you recommend before I spend my hard earned money. :) Like I said, I have tested and liked all of them.

I'm currently using SK Tools and have tried the new Pocket Mechanic Pro. Personally I still prefer SK Tools for system maintenance but the one thing lacking in SK Tools is defragmentation.

I was thinking along the same lines. That was the one thing in Pocket Mechanic that I really liked. Is there a freeware program that will defrag??

Do memory cards (The solid-state ones, at least) really get fragmented? It would seem that they shouldn't...

You are correct as this is what I have always thought. I could be wrong but I think that the storage on these card is fragmentation free.

Hmmmm....
Flash memory probably can get fragmented. It's sort of like the card-caralogues libraries used to use. Any time a memory location is changed an entire drawer is pulled (a segment of memory copied to a RAM buffer) the appropriate data is updated, and the entire drawer written back to storage. Reading is essentially the same, except nothing needs to be written back. So having your data neatly aligned in the drawers can reduce the number of drawers that need to be pulled (Flash to RAM copy). Both reading and writing benefit.

Storage cards do get fragmented but it doesn't hamper the performance too much.

What utility functions do you want to accomplish? I have SKTools. Works fine for what I use it for. I also have Memmaid, which I use to clean up dead files/reg entries/etc., kill process, and other memory related tasks. I use MemMaid for that all the time. Never really use the SKTools memory stuff. I do use the disk utils on occassion in SK. So if you want something to tune, format, etc., your memory cards, then SK. If you want a simple memory cleanup thing (that does do other things), maybe MemMaid.

Actually, ROM and memory cards (both flash ROM) do, in fact, get fragmented. Read this:
