So does that mean it is illegal to use the offline browsing option in my browser?

Or Avant Go?

Should every web page sue all the monitor companies now? I mean, they are displaying web page content on the monitors, so they are making money off the content, right?

Ok.. ok.. sorry... I was pushing it there.

But still... I have a hard time buying that there would be a legitimate legal concern with this sort of function. I know that if I was on the jury, I wouldn't convict!

And beyond AvantGo, isn't that what iSilo does?

Often it doesn't come down to whether or not we CAN do something, but whether or not we could survive a lawsuit (even one we win!) It's an ugly reality of today's world but one we certainly need to consider.

I would guess that a site's willingness to sue over this issue would be directly related to whether they felt they were losing ad revenue from a reader caching their information.
Yep, that's it. We've never chased anyone down on this sort of thing, but we have sent out C-and-D letters when people copy our content wholesale and post it on their own web sites. Obviously this is a little different but it's a fine line

No, I wouldn't worry about it as a private user. Most AvantGo channels are either A) setup by the web site and they've entered into an agreement so everyone knows what's up, or B) a custom channel created by an individual user and probably not going to be repurposed in some way that makes revenue for that user.

And those web sites that create their own content don't generally go looking for offenders, so don't sweat it. It's when you're googling around and you find that someone has plagiarized your stuff that makes you want to find a lawyer and say "sic 'em!" :approve:

AvantGo is definitely a different thing. AvantGo "channels" are specially prepared sites specially designed to display in AvantGo. Now if someone else built an AvantGo Reader I imagine THEY might run into trouble, but the people who publish an AvantGo channel do so with the explicit intent of having that data downloaded for offline viewing.
