Will Spb backup work with the ROM upgrades? I need to know! Dell is finally sending me a replacement after a horrible phone conversation and a tedious chat session.

fireman - no, it probably won't. Sprite's the only program which had this feature from what I recall... and SPB doesn't do that. I don't know what the status of it is in the current version of Sprite Backup, and if the feature works or not - it did with WM2003SE, but I don't know how it handles WM5; anyone else here tried it yet?
SPB will allow you to backup or restore specific components. It will work fine with a ROM upgrade.
To clarify, you can choose to backup specific components or if you have a full backup, you can un pack it and choose what to restore. Either way it will work.
Note - read and understand the instructions first!

But I believe you have to unpack it on a PC, right? There's no way in SPB to restore individual files when you're away from the PC (if my interpretation of SPB's documentation is correct). That's a major disadvantage for SPB.
I'm not too happy with Sprite based mostly on their customer service during the transition from the 5.0 beta to the 5.0 release (plus their forum seems to have a bunch of people who have problems restoring), but I have not tried switching to SPB based on my perception of its shortcomings (as described above). Any light you can shed on this would be helpful.

Let see if I am understanding this correctly. The current version of spb backup generate an .exe file that can be run from the ppc. By executing it, it will move to a selection dialog and a directory tree so you could select which folder to restore, or you can choose full restore of course.

The new version can / will allow you to restore specific files without a PC. I did exactly that yesterday when I needed to restore my Spb GPRS .dat file. :approve:

OK, thanks. I suspect I followed the link earlier in this thread that took me to SPB's unpack tool and assumed that was the only way to restore individual files.
One more question - is SPB tied to a specific device (like OCN5 and memmaid are)? The reason I ask is, not that I want to run it on more than one device, but with the frequency of device changes and the hassle that involved with OCN5, I have vowed to never buy software that uses that type of registration/activation.

Nope ... Spb uses a keycode and that's it. You can move from device to device as you need to. :approve:

I was pretty firm before about sticking it with Spb backup (as oppose to Sprite)just because it's cheaper, and pretty much do the same thing.
But, after obtaining the new version, and trying it out couple of times. I think the extra $10 or so for that Sprite is charging is very well worth the money.
Sprite has more options, and more control, and it seems for polish than Spb. Of course in the end, whatever backup program that can restore my device without any problem is the winner. So far, both program does it without problem, and so it's just fair to keep both of them on my device.
So if you're shying away from Sprite because it's $10.00 more, don't. The extra $$ is well worth it.

I had a buyer discount with spd, so I saved more then $10 :)
Y'all need to decide what is important to you: Backups; Recovery; Cost; Reliability; Ease of use (they each need to be evaluated independently as they are separate and distinct); and then use whatever fits the bill for you.

I agree with this statement. That's what's nice about trial versions of software!
