New (50.56) version of great bandwidth usage reducer tool Toonel is out & other news

If you ever wanted to reduce your bandwidth usage on your Pocket PC, you may already have heard about Toonel, the best way to do this all. Please read Using the Free Bandwidth Usage Saver, Toonel, on the Pocket PC for more information on the installation and configuration of the application.

The new version offers (limited, but in most cases – if you for example only want to stick to using the built-in Messenger client -, sufficient) SOCKS4/5 support. This means you will no longer need to disable Toonel (if you use it with Pocket Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer Mobile)) when you want to chat over the built-in MSN Messenger client.

This addition is certainly very good news for anyone using Toonel with the built-in Pocket Internet Explorer Web browser and still wanting to use the built-in MSN Messenger client to chat. Up until now (without SOCKS support in Toonel), firing up and using MSN Messenger required the proxy settings to be removed from the system-level Connections framework. Now, the situation has changed for good.

Availability

The CAB installer of the new version is available here (as with the download page).

Configuring your Pocket PC to use the SOCKS proxy server

All you need to do is adding the localhost IP ‘127.0.0.1’ into the SOCKS field, in addition to adding the HTTP proxy localhost address, as shown in this (pre-WM5) and this (WM5) screenshot.

Note that, as with the case of the HTTP (Web) proxy (and unlike with the POP3/IMAP/SMTP (mailing) cases where you must also configure Toonel to know about the connection “endpoints”), you don’t need to configure anything in Toonel itself to compress (and allow for) your MSN Messenger traffic. The only thing you’ll need to do is defining a Socks proxy in the above way.

With this, as can also be seen in this test example screenshot, you will be able to chat using MSN Messenger.

Other great Toonel news

In addition to SOCKS support, the Toonel folks have managed to fix a server-side overloading problem that, up to now, have sometimes resulted in nothing being received from the server. That is, if you’ve encountered stalling connections or connection timeout reports while browsing the Web or sending/receiving mail on your PDA through the Toonel client, the probability of getting them is really reduced in the new version.

Verdict

All in all, the best bandwidth usage reduction service available for Pocket PC users have become even better. If you use any kind of a non-unlimited mobile phone-based connection, you will really want to check out Toonel.
