This is what I like. Can we make this happen all the time?
It saves space and doesn't kill the entire screen. I only put 3 things in my start menu, 5 including "Settings" and "Programs". Then everything in Programs is all organized by folders instead of them all together.
I have:
"Explorer" (Resco)
"NetFront"
"iGuidance"
--------------
"Programs"
"Settings"
That Recent Items list is Clutter and is nasty. There is no need to display 15 recently opened items.

If you shorten the names of the shortcuts as they appear on the Start Menu you should be able to decrease the number of recent programs that are displayed.

That doesn't make sense. If you shorten the names? The start bar will still put in like 10 recent programs.
Is there no way to at least limit the amount, or change the start menu like I displayed earlier with the icons at the top?
You don't think it can be done.... yet. Am I the only one that thinks that the icons across the top of the start menu is alot better then having 7-9 taking up the whole screen.
I like a small start menu, and I hate clutter. I want just a few shortcuts listed that I use mostly. I don't want a game listed that I played 2 weeks ago.
One would think it is just a few registry changes.
Why can't you fool WM5 into thinking its in landscape mode when its not.
Its a small change one would think. Its not like Wm5 CAN'T do it at all. It can do it, we just haven't found a way to do it in portrait mode yet.
it's just not that simple. i've looked, and you can't make any registry changes to do it. it's built into the OS itself. shell32.exe appears to be what's controlling it.
you'll have to get a replacement menu, as was stated before.
although you're welcome to get total commander or phm regedit and prove me wrong :)

Yea I've been looking into it. I would love to get it working. I'm actually half tempted to just go landscape all the way.
Though I'm sure there are programs that wouldn't work right. I've always wanted to see this come to play. I wonder if there is anyone that knows how to edit the shell32.exe and do minor changes.
I know there are ways around it, but I'm trying to run lean. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.
I'm tempted to be a smartass and suggest something along the lines of 'if you're such an expert'... but the reality of the situation is that it does involve the shell32.exe, and probably the DLLs which are loaded in Landscape mode but which aren't used in Portrait. You'll probably need a start menu replacer or skinning program like SmallMenu or maybe Wisbar Advance 2 to do this.
I've already put in a feature request on the Lakeridge Software forums site regarding this type of functionality, but we'll see if it ever gets added to the latter - it already does a heck of a lot more to the Start Menu than most programs do, including the removal of the Recent Items folder, IIRC.
