I've tried, vBar, Magic Button, and Switcher on my x51v (A12) and all of them seem to lock up about once a day on me, forcing me to soft reset the machine.

What alternatives are there?

I would look elsewhere for the root cause of the lockups.

GS Pocket Magic, is my task manager of choice on my X50V, not sure if it supports WM5, but the ones you mentioned all caused one problem or another.

I use GS Pocket Magic on my X50V, but I'm not sure it's WM5 compatible. The three you mentioned all caused one problem or another.

Are you using a battery meter plug-in? vBar has been great for me. BattMemTime locked my Axim up.

It's not my whole axim that locks up, the start button still works...what does lock up is the "X" for closing programs, and the task manager itself. The programs themselves are locking up, but I'm still able to open up new programs using the start menu.

It also seems at the same time that I'm not able to get to my Today screen any longer, I suppose it might have something to do with TaskPlus or Callendar+ (The only two Today Screen Apps I'm running).

But this problem only occurs when I'm running one of the task managers. If I use without a task manager, I don't have any problems.

You could try PocketPlus or Wisbar Lite, in this case - the former offers a 'close button actually closes' feature, while the latter is a task manager as well as a start menu adjuster. Unlike Wisbar Advance 2, it doesn't skin your taskbar, so it's pretty lightweight in comparison.
