No, Wififofum doesn't require GPS. It's for wireless networks.

WFFF works OK without GPS as Gigi already stated.
If you have the GPS connected to WFFF you may use the 'radar' display to navigate to a hotspot.
I use it on my vacations ...

so if you use it with a GPS addapter on it is more accurate? As its not very accurate on locating my wifi router.

Radar Misconceptions

I didn't write WFFF, but I do have a solid understanding of WiFi and radio signals in general. It appears as though WFFF attempts to use time-transitional triangulation.

In order to determine the location of a radio transmitter, you need more than one receiver. By measuring the RSSS (signal strength) and vector of the signal from more than one receiver, you can pinpoint the location. The more receivers, the more accurate the location. See: Stargate (the movie, not the series). Good explanation of triangulation. GPS works exactly this way. Your receiver measures the time differential from multiple satellites with known locations. Based on the differences, it can calculate your location. The more satellites you connect to, the better you can calculate where you are.

Adding GPS to your WFFF setup will not let you "pinpoint" a hot spot. The most it can do is plot a graphical map of where you've been, and at what points on the map you "observed" different routers. The actual location of the router is still somewhat of a mystery.

What WFFF may be doing is assuming all other else is constant, and using your one receiver as multiple receivers, just over time. It assumes the position of the router is constant, and the interference/attenuation/etc are constant. By doing this, it can take multiple measurements at different locations, run a quick algorithm, and estimate the location of the router.

I'd be interested to see if that's how it's actually working....

In the end, WFFF is really just useful for finding access points where you are standing. Adding GPS lets you build a history and plot it on a map "push-pin" style.

"It appears as though WFFF attempts to use time-transitional triangulation."

No, I dont think so.
WFFF simply logs your GPS position and the router signal strength.
This gives a somewhat random looking 'radar' display whichs moves when you walk around.
The goal is to get the most points into the center of the display.

Actually, I find QoSScanner to be better at this because it also got two 'compasses' showing your direction of your movement and the calculated, estimated direction to the hotspot - and it also shows the 'radar'.

In one occasion on my last trip to Tyrkey I ended up in a moscue area - but I didn't dare to enter the moscue itself

Wififofum is a wardriving app. That why the GPS option is there. But you don't need to to make it work.
