Is it possible to mute the pocket pc with a hardware button tied to an app that mutes. Then when i press the button again the volume comes back. Is there anything out there that does this. This would be ideal in some situations.

Well, I map buttons with TCPMP, but I don't know if there is an app. for scripting mute without having TCPMP up. Look for a scripting app.
So, a half-suggestion.

I found this ancient program that was part of plus! for handheld pcs. It installs a mute.exe app to /Program Files/Plus. Just move the mute.exe app from that folder to the startup folder, and with a single tap you can always mute. It is just a small old app that sits is the sys tray. Tap it once, it mutes, icon changes. Tap it again, it unmutes.

Unfortunately mapping it to a hardware button does nothing, since the app itself only launches the sytem tray icon...
