BEWARE: Vito Button Mapper -> CRAP

ALL PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN FIXED WITH A NEW VERSION, OUT TODAY

I installed this button mapper today... boy, did I make a mistake!

First of all, the button mapper does not work - it is supposed to replace the built-in button mapping program and add on to it. After doing the required soft-reset, nothing new appeared. Second, after the soft-reset the bluetooth light came on. I went to turn it off into the bluetooth manager. It was shown as turned off. I tried turning it on. Nothing. I tried the BT Switch applet I've been using for a few weeks - it gave some weird error which came up with 0 results on google.

I uninstalled the junk.

Now, Active Sync won't connect. I tried re-installing it. No change. I can't even make a new SpriteBackup . Last one I have is a few weeks old.

If there's one thing that truly pisses me off, it's software which doesn't work like it's supposed to! Test it, or DON'T RELEASE IT.

I tried the free trial of VITO's IR universal remote software a while back. I'm glad I didn't pay for it. Needless to say, all traces of it are deleted from my axim and my pc.

Thanks for the warning. I am sorry you had to suffer through it. Because of your posting I will avoid this software.

It's a pain to install everything again, but it's made a bit easier by the SOTI Pocket Controller which allows me to control my Axim from my desktop - great soft! :D.

And I also noticed that after a hard reset my Axim became really snappy and fast in general. I can't say it was slow before - I had no complaints, but it was definately slower. I'm going to try to install only the "necessities" this time...

Wouldn't you be better off using your several-weeks old backup rather than reinstalling everything from scratch? :headscrat:

I tested it and it worked but I did not need it....so off to the round file it went.

Yes, but after I noticed the significant "snappyness" after the hard reset, I decided to do a fresh install of everything - which I just finished. Now I just need to configure everything...

Well I didn't plan to post it when I started writing it up ;). But when I did, it turned out to be so gigantically-overwhelming that I decided to post it :approve:.

Just an update:

A representative from VITO contacted me about an hour ago, and let me know that a new version was JUST released. This version addresses the compatibility problems with the Axims. I tried it out, and it works without any problems - just like it's supposed to. Just my bad luck - downloading an incompatible version a few hours before the update...

My question is 'does the new version also screw up the BT stack'? I just did a hard reset myself... and I'm a little leery of reinstalling everything again, as my last restore attempt's results were a little mixed. This was after I screwed up my system installing the Broadcom/Widcomm BT stack, causing PocketPlayer to lock up whenever it tried to play a file.

Otherwise, I'm looking at buying this, because it adds the 'hold' feature which I liked about the HP PDAs... as right now I'm about two buttons short of what I need in order to operate one-handed with any great speed. :D Thank Dell and HP and everyone for not introducing dedicated 'softkey' buttons.

No bluetooth problems experienced :). Just make sure to download their latest version from the official VITO Technology site.

What I really like is the "pop-up" task manager which can show up on a button click. This is what I did for my record button - task manager :). It can be operated with the d-pad :). Almost stylus-free operation :).

So you are back to liking Vito ? If so, might want to change the thread title slightly... :)

Just installed it - so far it's working out. It's a lot like the button functionality which I missed from the HP units... and it's doubled my buttons, so no complaints. ;)
